Personalized Picture Stamps in Canada and the United States

customized stamps :: picture postage :: pictureitpostage :: zazzle

Finished up your invite or add a special touch to a thank you card with your own customized stamps. They are also appropriate to mark a special occasion, a kid birthday or something special happening in your life.

Where to buy?

The personalization process is the same whether you live in the USA or Canada. The difference is where you buy them. In Canada, you must use Picture Postage, a service from Canada Post in partnership with Canadian Bank Note.

In the United States, several companies own a vendor license from United States Postal Service to print customized postage. You can buy the stamps in the denomination that you need: postcard, envelop size and weight. Unfortunately, Canada Post offers only the customized stamp for the most current postage (standard letter under 30 grams).

How it works?

They all provide online a tool to design your postage using the same 3 steps. You first submit your own digital image. Then, you adjust your image into the stamp frame. Finally, you send your order.

In the United States, I like PictureItPostage by Endicia. There 2 main advantages are:

  • bigger stamp – your picture is 1 1/2" x 1 3/16". Stamp is 2 1/2" x 1 9/16"
  • background colors – which I like a lot.

Zazzle is another company that I discovered through Perfect Bound, a cute blog by a girl who day dreams about living abroad, dark chocolate and being a magazine editor. Today, she paired wedding invitations with customized stamps. Check her post; she did an excellent pairing job.

The special features at Zazzle are:

  • you can write a small message text on top of your picture
  • three sizes of stamp
  • you can select pictures from the community gallery.

Canadian Way

The Canadian stamps look better in my opinion because they do not have a bar code. They look like regular stamp. But honestly, they are all pretty cool and can be as stylish as you design them. In Canada, you can buy a sheet of 40 stamps or a Keepsake Sheet of 20 stamps with a large image printed to keep as a souvenir.

Plan ahead and leave you plenty of time for delivery. These custom gifts make great gifts to new parents, grand parents or new homeowners.

My Retro Milk Glass Patio Snack Set

1950's milk glass patio snack set :: blue sky days

Kitsch has a good and a bad side. For me, this patio snack set is on the cute good side. I came across this 1950's cute milk glass breakfast or snack set through Jenn Ski’s blog.

I bought it from a friendly etsy seller. She inquired if the package arrived intact. Blue Sky Days sells fine vintage and handmade goods that she collected over the last 8 years.

This set brings a new style to my tableware collection. The design feels fun and out of the ordinary. In the 1970's, my mother has milk glass cups, so I guess there is an emotional connection. My husband likes it too.

This snack set is ideal to serve breakfast. Since I prefer drinking my morning coffee in a larger cup, I can serve yogurt or a fruit in the cup and put my toasts on the plate. Luckily, it harmonizes with my coffee/tea cup from my Chirp Dinnerware set by Lenox.

At lunch, I can serve a panini with a small soup or salad in the cup on a terrace.

I am saying thank to graphic designer and artist Jenn Ski. Without her, I would have missed this etsy find.

Amusing Painting Party by Guest Blogger Jennifer Mitchell

tag team paintng party

Perhaps you remember a TV show that's become a bit of a cult classic. The Joy of Oil Painting was a How-To show hosted by hippy-dippy artist, Bob Ross.

On each half-hour episode he'd complete an oil painting – usually a landscape with lots of "happy trees". He made it looks so easy! Suddenly I had a great idea for a party.

Tag Team Painting with Bob

Why not host a painting party? Fine art is so refined, right? Not in this case, because in order for this party to be truly fun, alcohol is a must. Best of all, no artistic talent is needed. I call this party Tag Team Painting With Bob (Drinks on the Side)

Basically, your guests are divided into groups of two or more. The show begins and painter number one paints along with Bob. After five minutes, the next person takes over while the first imbibes. And around they go until the show is over.

The team with the best painting is declared Master Pieces and wins a prize. Caution: your guests will want to paint another one, so have supplies ready.

Party Preparations

First, rent or buy a copy of The Joy of Oil Painting. All the TV seasons are available in DVD on Bob Ross’ Web site. Skim through the episodes until you find one or two you like. Then, make a list of the paint colors and brushes 'ole Bob uses.

You don't need to spend lots of money and you don't have to use oil paints. Acrylic paints in large bottles and cheap brushes are perfect. The same thing goes for canvases. They can be expensive, so substitute with large sheets of watercolor paper or poster board. Michaels is a good place to shop. And they often have coupons. A good prize is a frame for the big winner.

You need easels. I borrowed mine from a private school via a friend. You can buy tabletop easels made of foam core. Or, have your guests pull double duty as both artist and easel.

Party Time

Be sure to serve the Pisco Sours, or your favorite adult beverages, as your guests arrive. The dip and other nibbles can be set out, too. I recommend serving the dinner in between painting sets. Don't skip on the prizes! A frame for the winner is nice – you know they'll want to hang it over their mantle. Or, have a trophy made up. They're very inexpensive and lots of fun.
Peace, love and painting, dude!

Menu

Feel free to go wild with this menu. The idea is munchy food to go along with our mellow, hippy artist scene. Groovy.

Recipes by Jennifer Mitchell

Pisco Sours Recipe

  • 3 parts Pisco (a Chilean brandy that packs a punch)
  • 1 1/2 parts lemon juice
  • 1 -2 tablespoons fine sugar

Cheese and Bean Dip Recipe

  • One 8-ounce package cream cheese, sliced in thin slices
  • One can Hormel Chili – no beans
  • One package of shredded cheddar cheese
  • One bunch of green onions – chopped (just the green part)
  • Two bags of tortilla chips

Layer the ingredients in a baking dish in the order given – excluding the chips. Bake in a medium oven for about a half hour. Or, nuke in the microwave for about 5 minutes until melted. Serve with chips.

Sliders Recipe

Makes 12 mini hamburgers a la White Castle

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1/2 chopped onion
  • 1 package cheddar cheese slices
  • One package Parker House rolls, or other type of dinner roll.

Mix the hamburger with salt and pepper. Make 12 little meatballs and flatten to form patties. Sauté the onions and set them aside. Cook up the burgers and add cheese, if desired. Place burgers on rolls, along with the onion.

Book Club Party by Guest Blogger Jennifer Mitchell

to kill a mockingbird book club party :: the gift of southern cooking

I am thrilled to have my first guest blogger, Jennifer Mitchell of Design Hole.

I'm so happy to be guest blogging for Kim. I write about interior design and this gives me a chance to write about my second love – throwing dinner parties for friends. Did I mention that I love to cook? I do.

My favorite dinner party is the one I throw every January, when it's my turn to play hostess for my book club. In our book club, the hostess chooses the book. And, while we all always enjoy the associated discussion, for us the evening is really all about the food.

I like to plan the menu around the location or theme of the book. Sometimes it presents a bit of a challenge, but it also makes it more fun. Here is one of my favorite book club ideas.

To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee

Most people read this book in high school. But it's amazing how much more you take away from it as an adult. This Southern Gothic novel was drawn largely from Lee's childhood memories. Her life-long friend, Truman Capote, makes an appearance as Dill.  I also recommend Mockingbird, an excellent biography of Lee written by Charles Shields.

A southern novel calls for southern food. My favorite cookbook for authentic recipes is The Gift of Southern Cooking, by Edna Lewis and Scott Peacock. This is the real deal, with an excellent Lane cake recipe. I have my own recipe for fried chicken (which I have my southern born grandmother to thank for). The cake is a particularly good choice because it's mentioned in the book as a secret recipe, and can be made several days in advance.

Menu

  • Toast cups with shrimp salad
  • Fried chicken
  • Steamed asparagus
  • Biscuits
  • Lane cake

Jennifer Mitchell’s Fried Chicken

Throw your diet out the door – at least for one night. This recipe takes time, but don't skip steps. Trust me, it's worth it. Thanks go to my grandmother, who grew up in Bessemer, Alabama.

Ingredients:

  • One 3-pound (1 1/2 Kilo) chicken, cut into pieces
  • 1/2 cup kosher salt
  • 1 quart/ liter buttermilk
  • 1 1/2 pounds (3/4 kilo) lard
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp pepper

Step by step instructions

  1. Brine the chicken (this tenderizes the meat and is essential) by soaking the pieces in a large bowl of water (about 2 quarts or liters) mixed with kosher salt for eight hours, or overnight. Drain and rinse out the bow. Return the chicken to the bowl and cover it with the buttermilk for another eight hours. Drain the chicken.
  2. To prepare for frying, mix the flour with the salt and pepper in a bowl.  Heat the lard in a skillet (I use a well-seasoned cast iron one) to a temperature of 350 F (175 C). The temperature is really important.
  3. Dredge the chicken in the flour mixture and fry it for about 10 minutes on each side. Start with the skin side down, fry in batches – skimming the browned bit in between.
  4. Drain in a single layer on crumpled paper towels, or wire racks. Do not layer until you're ready to serve, or the chicken will steam itself and lose its crispness.
  5. Keep it warm in a low oven, until ready to serve. It's good at room temperature, too.

Five Chocolate Pudding Recipes from the New York Times and La Tartine Gourmande

milk chocolate banana pudding with wafer crumbs new york times :: chocolate pot de creme at laloux

I adore custards for their smoothness and velvety texture. From what I read this morning, custards produce the best chocolate puddings in the world.

In the United States, many Chefs wrote on their menu Pudding instead of Pot de crème to trigger the emotional connection that people have with puddings. But the best puddings are in reality Pot de Crème, a French recipe. In Quebec, we will call it Pot de crème.

I am showing you again the delicious Chocolate pot-de-crème, caramel and Maldon salt that my husband enjoyed at Laloux last winter.

Custard is a creamy preparation made with eggs and cream or milk, thickened with heat. Some recipes call for a bain-marie (double boiler) while other do it on a skillet. But one thing for sure, always melt your chocolate in a double boiler.

Not your Grand Mother Pudding Recipe

Melissa Clark wrote an article about her quest for the perfect chocolate pudding at home.

Melissa started by saying that she imagined an idyllic US grand mother all her life but now she had to switch her mind to a French Grandma. When she learned the trick about the Pot de crème, she decided to try 4 recipes involving custards in one way or another.

Dark Chocolate Custard

dark chocolate custard by la tartine gourmande

While we are on the subject, I could not resist spotlighting a recipe from Béatrice of La Tartine Gourmande. She is the master of little pots after all. And I was curious to see how a French expatriate living in Boston makes her custard.

One important trick given by Béa with her Dark Chocolate Custard recipe is how to save your custard. If you let it boil, your ruin your custard. But all you need to do are a few simple steps to make your custard smooth and creamy again.

Serving a chocolate custard or pudding with fresh fruits instead of whipped cream makes the dish not only healthier but lighter. With temperature rising, that freshness will be welcome at the dining table.

What do you think?

Any of these 5 recipes would make a delightful dessert for your family and your guests. Which recipe inspires you the most? Do you have a trick of your own?

Bring Happiness in Your Kitchen with Koziol

boskop lunchbox pure carafe pic up aroma cup oxyzen partiton wall Koziol kitchenware

Living in a 4 season climate enhances the joy that we feel when the warm weather comes back.

It is the best time to introduce the summer 2008 collection from a brand that symbolizes Design, Happiness, Life and Values. I am talking about Koziol, the German company that was founded in 1912 by Bernhard Koziol.

Design, Happiness, Life and Values was the 4 world themes that they presented at the Ambiente Fair in Frankfurt last February. The summer 2008 Koziol collection hit the shelf mid-March 2008. I am showing my favorites.

Outdoor Entertaining

A must outdoor entertaining is the new PURE series with carafe, cups, bottle cooler and tray. A specially engineered lid keeps out dust and insects. Cool! The same lid keeps in ice cubes and lemon slices while pouring.

An ingenious combination of porcelain and plastic surrounds the AROMA series. The stylish companion for your breakfast, you can choose between a cup, an espresso cup, a cappuccino cup, a latte cup and a bowl called AROMA BIG. The AROMA series is available in orange, raspberry and tuerkis (aqua).

PIC UP is a fun Party Fork Set. Use this handy tool to serve tapas, olives, antipasti and cheese chunks. For a family barbecue party, you cannot go wrong with PIC UP.

The OXYGEN partition recalls pebbles or the bubbles in carbonated drinks. I may install an OXYGEN partition wall like in front of my urban terrace. I wish for more privacy that carries an airy lightness. The vibrant green and turquoise of OXYGEN partition elements create the perfect backdrop for my pool. It was designed by the Spanish team Harry & Camila.

Picnicware

Old products are also hot this summer. Designed in 1995 by Rainer Lehn, the FROSCHKÖNIG bottle opener wears new colors. The OLLI Lunchbox keeps food fresh and mobile since F. Person and J. Hansen designed it in 1996. What I like about this lunchbox is its form. It must be easy to carry it around.

Hanging on the tree like fruits are the cute BOSKOP Lunchboxes. You will get no problem fitting double-layer and triple-layer sandwiches inside the BOSKOP. And your fresh fruit will still be intact on destination. The cute leaves work as the snap closure. This brand new design BOSKOP emerged from the brain of Luisa Finke.

Kitchen Cleaning and Storage

TIM & TWEETIE brushes wear the cool colors of summer 2008. The are so lovable.

HEIDI is a floral tie fastener. For party favors at Mother's Day, a Sunday brunch or a bridal shower, HEIDI will enhance your packaging. And your guests can reuse this cute band. Adorned with its pretty flower, the band dependably seals bags and pouches. HEIDI opens at will, as often as you wish.

Where to Buy

The German retailer Design 3000 carries the entire Koziol catalogue. Design 3000 is a heavenly shop for me with tons of wonderful brands. They got all the colors, even in hues that I did not talk about. Koziol seems harder to find in the United States since the distributor has closed down. Design 3000 ships to the United States and internationally.

In Canada, specialized retailers across the country carry the Koziol. As usual, Canadian retailers are shy when it comes to publish their inventory online, so I cannot provide you with specific links. So shop around, you can find the Koziol products in Canada.

Yuri Gagarin's Night Party 2008 in Montreal

Yuri Gagarin's Night Party 2008 in Montreal

My friend and painter Bettina Forget hosted a great party last Saturday (April 12th, 2008) to commemorate the anniversary of First Man in Space. Yuri Gagarin became the first human to reach space on April 12th, 1961. Yuri orbited the Earth.

The Decor

The loft apartment was nicely decorated for the event. Several guests rented or made cool science-fiction costumes.

Astronomical art exhibit of paintings done by Bettina coupled with the projection of space images and astro-art iMovies created a wonderful atmosphere.

The Space Agency gave us posters, pins, stickers, tattoos so people without costumes looked more festive. Individual gift bags greeted us at the door.

The Drink Menu

Russian vodka was on top of the alcohol chain. The signature drink was Cosmonaut, a drink made of vodka and Tang. At the bar station, the Space-Themes Drink menu was filled with Apollo ‘n Lemon, Sputnik, Saturn V, Soyuz Capsule, Voyager, Mir, Rasputin and Sea of Tranquility.

Costume Contest

Next year, Jerome and I will get some costumes. In fact, Jerome was sad that he did not purchase a Star Trek uniform when we visited the Star Trek The Experience in Las Vegas last January. Two prizes were awarded for the best space-inspired costume.

Grand-prize winner for his outstanding helmet design: Olivier Hanigan - check it on Bettina's blog
Runner-up winner for her sublime hoola-hoop performance: Kelli Hanrahan

Bettina wrote a nice recollection of Yuri Night 08 on her Inside the Artist's Studio blog. Like Bettina said: Montrealers know how to party! We went to bed pretty late. On our way home, we stopped by at Fairmont Bagels to buy more freshly out of the oven bagels. We ate a final one before going to bed and kept the rest for Sunday breakfast. Jerome and I cannot wait for the 2009 edition.

My Top 3 inspirations from May 2008 Canadian House & Home Magazine

ciot marble :: through sink :: elte round dining table :: modern kitchen on Canadian House & Home May 2008

The May 2008 of Canadian House & Home is the Green Issue. It is full of eco-friendly advices and products. What caught my eyes are 3 entertaining details.

Trough sink

The first one is an advertising picture by Ciot. The marble slat is gorgeous. It looks so modern.

I wish I have the space to install a through sink. Typically, you integrate the through sink in your preparation area. When you entertain friends, you use this long and narrow sink to chill bottles of wines, champagnes and beers. Check out the model by Kohler. This trough sink exterior dimensions are 60" x 8-1/4" with a basin depth of 5-15/16".

Round Dining Table

The elegance of the classical round table is irrefutable. A round table of the right size promotes group conversation.

This upscale Elte dining table is a reproduction of the Georgian style. The table has a rosewood cross banding around blistered mahogany veneer over an insert base. The Plain saber legs with brass casters make it easy to move around when you serving a standing buffet party.

One special detail about this table is that the leaves attached to the outer edges to preserve the true circle shape when extended. All these special elements explain the high price tag.

Kitchen Design

I love the style of this kitchen. What special about it is the integration of bar elements. This kitchen was designed to not look as a kitchen but more like the eating bar of a restaurant. Yet, the kitchen works well when cooking. This is a wise decision if you want your kitchen to be a part of your living room.

A 16 feet island seems marvelous. Since my kitchen space is about 10 x 11 feet, it is out of the question for the moment. At least, I got the part where my guests can sit and chat with me while I am cooking.

A Digital Issue

In case you do not know, you can subscribe to a digital issue. I receive both the digital and the print versions. At my renewal, I am thinking of renewing the digital version only. It works very well and I can always access the digital version before the print version. The digital version costs $24.95 for 12 issues. A bargain for US and International subscribers.

Festive Glassware for Spring and Summer by BodaNova

festiveglasses

Things can be bold, cheerful and playful and still convey a mature look. Fun tableware goes hand in hand with spring and summer entertaining. I went on a lookout for festive glasses to decorate in a flash your table settings.

I started my search with the Scandinavian designers since designing lively and fun patterns is one of their strength. I found what I was looking for at BodaNova. Founded in 1971 in Boda, Sweden, BodaNova is now part of Iittala Group.

One Tube - Four Glasses

The tube package is really neat. With pattern names like Joy Smile, Joy Fun, Joy Happy, Joy Play, One Tube - Four Glasses conveys Glad to Be Here when you give it to the hostess. Handy to carry around, you can buy a set or two for when you go to picnic.

With its retro vibe, One Tube - Four Glasses is the perfect gift for people who like to chill in a cocktail lounge atmosphere. The glassware design would also be perfect for a kid party.

Fun-Filled Nature Inspired Glassware

One year ago, the Season concept was launched (middle right picture). Designer Barbro Wesslander for BodaNova played with her sense of color, style and fantasy. Season comes in green, yellow, red and black. The series includes a glass, a small plate, a serving plate, a tray, tablemats and serviettes.

For spring 2008, Barbro Wesslander has created the Blossom series (top right picture). The patterns are clearly more organic. You can serve all sorts of coffee, chocolate drinks and beer in the Blossom’s Blue Flowers and Brown Flowers. In fact, the Brown design includes three round metal canisters that are ideal for storing tea, coffee, cocoa and sugar.

For an alfresco dinner or Mother’s Day, go with the Green Plants or Pink Plants. This year pink and green is a hot color combination, so you can mix both. It is easy to imagine yourself sipping a fresh juice or a glass of rosé in the Plants design. Three rectangular canisters for serving crisp breads, crackers, biscuits and sweets complete the Green Plants family.

Crisp Breads

I am a fan of crisp breads. I stopped eating crackers and replaced then by crisp breads about five years ago. I typically buy two kinds: the Light Rye and the Dark Rye by Ryvita. These are made in England. To inspire you to eat more crisp bread, I took a tasty photo from Wasa Web site, they are the world's largest producer of crisp bread.

Stock several crisp bread bags on your pantry. You will be ready to make canapés for improvised parties. Why not borrow the Insalata Caprese on crisp bread idea from a Ryvita advertising campaign?

Eco-Chic Party Essentials

recycled bottles : bamboo serving trays : cork tray : coasters ecochic spring party ideas

As more and more people are concerned with what is happening to the environment, many are looking for party ideas on how to throw an eco-friendly party. Recycling things makes a huge difference. With a little bit of imagination, you can find new purposes to used objects.

So instead of heading to the store for new stuff, hunt the flea market to dig vintage tabletop items and home accessories. Throwing an eco-chic party is an excellent way to persuade your friends that they can both live in style and care for the environment.

And you are not limited to the rustic look anymore. I found items that rock. I selected four eco-friendly products and an eco-friendly idea to help you prove your case to your friends on Earth Day.

Corks

Corks can also protect your tables and countertops from hot pots and pans. Martha Stewart designed a cork trivet. You will need about 50 for a medium sized trivet. Use corks as a holder for the table place cards, to display the cheese tags for the cheese platter.

The bended Cork Tray looks pretty cool. Designed and developed for Branch, the Cork Tray is a more sustainable version of Urbana Design’s bended plywood tray. A big advantage of using cork, the top creates a non-skid surface.

Bamboo

The Golden Brown Serving Trays are by Bambu, the maker of Veneerware. The trays are 100% organically-grown bamboo, with non-toxic adhesive and natural food-safe wood oil.

I introduced Veneerware last October as the most stylish eco-friendly disposable dishes. I still think that.

Recycled Glass Dishes

The rustic charm of the Del Sol green tinted bottles comes from used glass containers. The glass is shaped in molds and then, embellished with rustic seams and thick rims. These 32 oz. stoppered bottles can be used for dressings, oils, vinegars, lemonade, ice tea and water.

The bad news for North American tree huggers is that the Del Sol tableware collection is made in Spain. Old glass bottles, bowls and plates can be found at the flea market.

Recycled Tires

Some items can be fun like the Six-Pack Coasters made of recycled tires. The package-storage is quite ingenious. Inspired by the conventional 6-pack, simply pop out each individual coaster for use. When finished, pop it back into its handy "ring" for storage. The Six-Pack Coasters are handmade by JoshJakus in Oakland, California.

Picks of the Week on the blogosphere | 080407 issue

party basics for newlyweds : target club wedd catalog : hard boiled eggs : handmade birdies mugs

I just read the latest book by wedding style guru Maria McBride called Party Basics for New Nesters. The book aimed to be a guide for the first year of entertaining that will experience newlyweds.

The book captures a series of stylish decor, table settings, and menu options. Party Basics for New Nesters cover the yearly round of events from romantic parties for two, dinners for four, weekend feasts, family celebrations, and a wide range of holidays.

Featured posts

In line with the concept of helping newlyweds and young adults to raise the bar compared to their college day party days, I selected three wonderful posts that go back to the basics of entertaining.

NOTCOT for Target’s Club Wedd Catalog- 04.03.08

Target devised their latest catalogue for those prepping for their vows around the same ideas but for what you need around the house. I have to agree that the What you need in your kitchen drawer on page 74 covers the kitchen utensil essentials that anyone should have for cooking.

The followers of Daily Candy will recognize the illustrations style. Yes, Target hired Sujean Rim, the  signature illustrator behind Daily Candy to give personality to their wedding catalog. Sujean is right on the spot as usual.

La Tartine Gourmande for Hard Boiled Eggs — Les oeufs durs

I told you before Easter that hard boiled eggs are making a comeback. Like Beatrice's father, my father used to eat hard boiled eggs as a snack. You can serve hard boiled eggs at a brunch or bring them at a picnic.

This time, Beatrice made these cute Dressed Up Marbled Eggs with oil marinated anchovies, chives, horseradish preserved in vinegar, fleur de sel and pepper.

For a brunch table, showcase a couple whole eggs with braided chives on your serving plate. Take some clues on how to do it by visiting La Tartine Gourmande. It is a sure way to impress your guests.

Rare Bird Finds for Etsy Saturday!

Bucatini or Spaghetti Alla Carbonara for Supper

Bucatini or Spaghetti Alla Carbonara : a la di stasio

Today, I proposed a classic dish for supper: Bucatini or Spaghetti Alla Carbonara. My favorite Pasta All Carbonara recipe is one inspired by the Remo Contini of Antica Trattoria da Carlone, a restaurant in Rome, Italy.

My recipe comes from a fabulous Italian cooking book that is only available in French. Filled with authentic Italian recipes, Pasta et cetera à la di Stasio was probably under all the Christmas trees across Quebec last year. This recipe reconciled me with Pasta All Carbonara. I started avoiding over the last decade pasta all carbonara because of the profusion of cheap cream recipes in restaurants.

Selecting the pasta

For the pasta, the large surface of bucatini gives more adherence to the sauce. The problem with bucatini is that it is harder to eat; therefore not elegant. Serving bucatini is not a good idea if you are having friends over. Serve spaghetti instead with a bottle of red Italian wine. Yes, try pairing a no-cream Pasta All Carbonara with red wine; you will see it is a delightful match.

My favorite Spaghetti Alla Carbonara Recipe

I translate the recipe with my adaptations from the original A la di Stasio's recipe.

Ingredients for 2 portions:

  • 8 oz (225 g) of spaghetti / bucatini
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) of 1-inch block of pancetta that you will cut in 1/2 inch cubes – if you have no choice, thin sliced pancetta will do
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) of freshly grated Parmigiano Reggiano – the real thing
  • Lots of freshly ground pepper - roughly grounded if you can eat them
  • A couple of splashes of olive oil
  • Cooking water from the pasta

Step by step instructions:

  1. Cook your pasta in salted boiling water.
  2. During that time, put the olive oil on a hot large, frying pan (avoid the non stick pan here). Cook the pancetta at medium-high a few minutes, until golden. You may have to reduce the heat to medium, if you used the thinner pancetta.
  3. Put the eggs and parmesan in a large service bowl. Mix with a fork. Add the pepper.
  4. Remember to reserve a cup of cooking water before your drain the pasta.
  5. Put the pasta over the pancetta in the pan. Mix them well.
  6. Now it is time to work quickly. Put half of the pasta in the serving bowl. Toss the egg/parmesan mixture over the pasta to coat all the pasta. Then add the rest and toss again with your fork. It is possible that it takes a few practice runs before you achieve a perfect smooth texture. Therefore, I suggest you do not serve it the first time you prepare this recipe.
  7. Sprinkle parmesan before serving. Enjoy!

Cream version

If you prefer a cream recipe, I find a Bucatini Alla Carbonara recipe online that seems excellent. I dug this creamy recipe on David Seah blog. His blog has nothing to do with cooking. David writes about productivity and other methods of empowering yourself. The recipe was made by his sister.

New dinnerware arrivals at Horchow

recamier flatware : scribed poppy dinnerware : gracious good pitcher pastry dome and platter at horchow spring 2008

Even though I am a modernist, I still fall under the spells of old-world charm. That is why I enjoy browsing the Horchow’s online catalogue. For spring 2008, their inventory is getting better.

I selected some pieces for designing an easy entertaining Spring / Summer tabletop. These are pieces that you will cherish for years to come. You can mix and match them with lots of things.

An inside look at my Spring tabletop

The star of your table will be the hand-painted Scribed Poppy Dinnerware. The pattern looks fresh and fun.

For the traditional look, place a natural tone tablecloth on your dining table. If you want a fresher look, opt for the hip Chilewich Tablemats. To reproduce the look of the wooden table on this picture, use the Woodgrain Tablemats in driftwood or pecan.

The Santa Fe Stoneworks Steak Knives add character to the table. Dad is sure to like those steak knives. So make a note for Father's Day. The handcrafted stainless steel Recamier flatware by Marisopa set is made of Norwegian birch handles with a dark teak finish. Overall, the table look is gender neutral.

Timeless serving ware

From Gracious Goods, I select pitcher with a beautifully ornate cast aluminum base. A pitcher is a must for serving water and ice tea. For a dessert table, you cannot go wrong with the Domed Pedestal Servers and the matching Round Platter. The dome pedestals are all the rage for a few seasons now. I do not think this trend will go away soon because they add sophistication instantly. Therefore it makes sense to splurge in one or two remarkable pastry dome pedestals.

It seems that several products I selected are quite popular because a bunch is back-ordered right now. Some items will be available in April, others will arrive early May. So you should be able to get everything for the upcoming Mother’s Day brunch if you want to.

Give a Book about Entertaining to the Hostess

easy entertaining : entertaining planner : recipe notes : mother's cooking by ryland peters & small

My theory is that you should keep at home a reserve of hostess gifts. This way, you are always ready for an impromptu dinner party invitation and you save time by minimizing your shopping trips.

A lot of people from newlyweds to single men are searching for clues on how to entertain properly. The best books for them pass on tips for simple entertaining. Easy to follow instructions and gorgeous photography are essentials. Otherwise, people do not put into practice what is in the book.

That is what I like about the books by Ryland Peters & Small. To make it easier for you, stash any of these 4 new releases until you need a hostess gift:

The beauty within a book

Ryland Peters & Small are renowned for their books devoted to: food and drinks, home and garden, health and well-being. Their books provide practical information about planning, staging and organizing an event at home.

This British editor has a distinctive look. Once you know the brand, you can instantly identity that you are holding on your hand a Ryland Peters & Small book. I am a fan obviously of their fresh modern visual.

What is your favorite book about entertaining?

Spring Flowers by the Flower Council of Holland

easter and spring 2008 flower council

Outstanding flower arrangements fill a room or a table with elegance. The Flower Council of Holland Web site is always a good source of inspiration for floral trends.

What is hot for Spring 2008?

Design trends are global. Floral arrangements follow what we are seeing in fashion and home decor. Grey, whites and happy colors steal the show.

The excellent blog ROOM and Serve showcased yesterday four amazing Easter bouquets. I am showing two of them. The rest are from the Spring 2008 photo gallery. A series of bouquets shows that white provides energy. They are all impressive and inspiring.

Finally, I hold a prejudice against carnations. But looking at these fashionable pink, lilac and green carnation installations, I may have to agree that carnations are in vogue. Look at the step by step instructions to reproduce this sophisticated presentation.

Jamie at Home will reach my home soon

jamie at home : chicken legs : grilled monkfish : pasta alla norma

This morning, I received my shipping confirmation for the latest book by Jamie Oliver. I cannot wait. I am a huge fan of the guy. When Jamie at Home will hit my cooking library shelf, my count will be 6 out 8 of his books.

Some recipes are in several books but it is fun because you can see how that recipe evolved and refined your own version. My husband and I (we do team work) made the best risotto. We use recipes from two books; handy since the pages of recipe are always visible. We take the better of each one.

My favorite Jamie Oliver’s recipes

I am giving you the recipes that I am cooking over and over, book by book.

The Naked Chef

The Mushroom Risotto with Garlic, Thyme and Parsley is my ultimate risotto. We often make this on a Friday or Saturday night so we can eat risotto cakes for breakfast the next morning. So do not be afraid to make plenty because a risotto cake is divine. The recipe is simply the same as making a patty of hash browns except that the potatoes are replaced by the risotto. I fried mine in olive oil. Check out his basic risotto recipe.

The Naked Chef Takes Off (a.k.a Return of the Naked Chef)

Seared scallops and crispy prosciutto with roasted tomatoes and smashed white beans. This is heaven on Earth! I served this appetizer to all kind of people and it was always a hit. Sometimes, I cook this recipe as a main course for my husband and me.

Get a feel of his book with the seared carpaccio of beef with roasted baby beets, creamed horseradish, watercress and parmesan published on Jamie Oliver’s Web site.

Jamie’s Dinners

For the most delectable side dish, nothing beats the Carrots boiled with orange, garlic and herbs. I often served those carrots with a braised beef an easy entertaining dinner party.

My favorite recipe from Jamie’s Dinners has to be tender and crisp chicken legs with sweet tomatoes. I made this recipe so often that I stop counting. I add new potatoes when they are in season. I like the lightness of this dish. For that reason, I simply served slices of rustic bread with it. Add a nice bottle of white wine and you have the perfect meal.

Jamie’s Italy

Strangely that is the book I cook the least. I said strangely because I love the authenticity of Italian cooking. The freshness of the insalata amalfitana seduces me. When the tomatoes are in season, nothing beats the classic insalata caprese.

I could eat soups every day. You will find wonderful earthy soups in Jamie’s Italy. You can get online the recipes for two delicious pasta dishes: Linguine all carbonara di salsiccia, a.k.a. sausage carbonara plus the pasta alla norma. Looking at the book recipes, I just add Spaghetti with shrimp and arugula to my to-do list.

Cook with Jamie

My husband and I made the lovely easy caramelle with ricotta, basic and black olives last December. It was a trial run for an upcoming dinner party. We glad we tried to prepare the recipe before because we failed miserably. Let me tell you that it is not so easy if you just starting to make your own pasta. The recipe was great but we decide to improve our pasta making skills before making our own caramelle again. We will achieve it one day.

I love eating fish. The grilled or roasted monkfish with black olive sauce and lemon mash is my type of fish recipe. It is so delicious when the weather is warm.

I will keep posted on my cooking experience once I read my copy of the Jamie at Home. In the meanwhile, I want to know:
What is your favorite recipe by Jamie Oliver?

My 6 must-have kitchenware for entertaining from Sagaform

bamboo : herb pot trio : bar 1 club : wine : caviar bowl set by sagaform

I have been a fan of Sagaform for many years now. Sagaform produces innovative kitchen accessories with beautiful simple lines at an affordable price. And did I mention that Sagaform is Scandinavian?

I particularly appreciate Sagaform for their amazing serving ware. They are designed with casual entertaining in mind. Here are my picks from the 2008 Sagaform catalogue.

Bamboo by Peter and Eva Moritz

This entertaining collection is made of farmed bamboo. The line is quite complete with serving bowls, serving / cutting boards, sandwich plates, butter knifes, serving spoons, and salad utensils.

A fun feature is the spoon fitting sleekly over the edge of the bowl. This way, there is less stuff on the buffet table. The cutting board has an unusual, two-circle shape with a handle placed on the middle.

Herb Pot Trio by Pascal Charmolu

Sagaform's herb pot is one of their most popular items. Now, this acclaimed design can fit three pots. The popularity of the herb pot is not slowing if you base your assessment on the coverage on the blogosphere lately.

Made of stoneware, Herb Pot Trio is the coolest manufactured watering pot for fresh herbs on the market. You water the herbs through the corner hole. Nothing beats the taste freshly harvested herbs. Bring this excellent housewarming gift filled with your favorite herbs.

Café by Lovisa Wattman

I really like the ingenious mug with saucer / lid made by Lovisa. The handle of the saucer / lid makes it easy to carry the mug when it is hot. A scone or a small muffin fits into the hole .

People do not receive often breakfast dinnerware as a gift. For that reason, they can be more appreciated. Beautiful and handy, this set is a wonderful way to start your day or to serve tea in the afternoon.

Bar I Club and Caviar Bowl by Matz Borgström

The colorful base of the Bar I Club glassware featured the hot colors of Spring 2008. Your guests can identify these glasses instantly through colored base.

For a punch of class, get the stainless steel Caviar Bowl Set. They would be perfect next to your Club Champagne glasses, Martini glasses and Schnapps glasses.

Bar I Wine by Pascal Charmolu

If you are looking for hip and fresh design for wine accessories, do not look further than Bar I Wine. The The Wine carafe comes with a silicone holder, stainless steel cork and a drying rack. The wine cooler is wide enough to hold the Wine carafe, which is a rare thing.

The Wine carafe set and the Wine cooler are two more creations by Pascal Charmolu, a French citizen who has lived in Stockholm since 1984.

Brunch Tableware by C.Quoi

203 bread bag : reb egg basket : oug egg cup by c.quoi

With a name that translates to What is it?, you expect unusual products from C.Quoi. This French design studio offers a feast of whimsical yet practical objects for the home.

C.Quoi produces several objects for the kitchen. I select my favorites for entertaining. Perfect for a brunch, these luxurious items add more than charm and beauty to your tableware.

After reading what makes them so special, I convey that each one will make a one-of-a-kind wedding gift or housewarming gift.

203 Bread Basket by Karine Jollet

203 is a linen bread basket filled with cherry pits. You can warm the bag in the microwave to keep your bread hot. 203 can be closed like a purse to keep your bread fresh or opened for serving. If you are looking for an indulgence, 203 is the bread bag for you.

RBE Egg Basket by Karine Jollet

I really like the modern country style of this unique egg basket. RBE is padded with straw in order to delicately impregnate the eggs with its countryside aroma. I do not know if it works but the idea sounds charming as long as the scent is delicate.

Ouf Egg Cup by Kittypong Wanapinyosak

You probably need practice to elegantly use this Kotibe wood egg cup. Ouf exposes the egg so much that the egg is practically suspended in the air. The concept is to let you decide the angle from which to eat your soft-boiled egg. It is cute but I fear it will be too hard to maneuver on the morning.

Prepping the bathroom for house guests

pottery barn bathroom accessories : marimekko towels : umbra

With Easter at the corner, you may visit friends or family from out of town as home guests.

Beside taking care of their sleeping quarters, I feel the bathroom is the most important room to prepare in advance. For a stay longer than one night, you can plan on having an extra key ready at their arrival.

I gave you some tips on how to prepare the bathroom so you and your guests enjoy their time together.

My checklist

  1. Set everything in advance, so you will get more time to enjoy the company of your guests. Your guests will feel welcome right away and enjoy a more comfortable stay.
  2. Vary the colors or the patterns from one towel set to the next. Your guests must be easy to identity which towels they were assigned to.
  3. Prepare a well-stocked basket / shelf on the linen closet with the basis: soap bars, body wash, hair products, razors, hair dryer, moisturizing lotions. Place in jars: cotton balls, hygienic cotton swabs, adhesive bandages, and tampons.
  4. Have enough space to hang the wet towels. Since you may not have enough wall space in your bathroom, install a few extra double hooks instead of more towel bars. Install temporary over-the-door hook on the guest bedrooms. A fun idea from Finland is the towel clips. The kids will love having their own clip to hang their towels. You never know, the towel clips may persuade your kids to clean up every day, at least for a while.
  5. Leave some free storage bin or shelf in the shower or bath tub so you get can leave their products. The cling corner bin by Umbra is a simple solution that you can remove when you guests return home.
  6. Provide a pair of plush slippers for each guest that you can throw in the washing machine. Get the average size for women and for men.
  7. Do not worry if you forgot something. Your guests would not mind since they felt welcome from the start.

Making your own spa cucumber water

Watch my video filmed next to a spa refreshment station in the Californian Wine Country.

Since it is no more fashionable to serve bottled water, the trendy hostess needs to dish up the tab water. Last summer, I showed you how to serve a pitcher of water with fresh berries. The look was great but the taste of the water is not distinctively altered by the berries.

Cucumber water improves the taste of tap water. Spa aficionados already experience the benefits of cucumber water for improving the look of your skin. On top of it, this drink is simple to make at home.

Cucumber Water Recipe

In order for the cucumber to fully release its juice, you need to prepare it the day before your event.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cucumber, sliced and unpeeled + 6-7 cucumber slices for decoration
  • 1 ½ to 2 liters of water
  • 3 mint sprigs + 2 mint sprig
