Playful Furniture and Child-Friendly Plate by James Van Vossel

playful furniture and child-friendly plate by james van vossel

James Van Vossel is a designer from Belgium who creates fun furniture and housewares. He designs both for adults and children. But I think that he shines the most with his kids collection. Here are three products from his 2008 collection.

Ergonomic playing and sitting ball

The three handles of the inflatable Z-ball are positioned to give a better position to the child. The side handles give more support so the child can sit more in front.

I imagine a child room or a playroom with a trio of Z-balls to reproduce a lounge feeling. The children can even play video games while sitting on the Z-ball.

Modular cubes

Connect is another take on a concept done several times on the past by other designers. What James Van Vossel's design brings new to the table are the big elastics that hold the cubes together. It is so cute!

A Moon habitat party theme for a kid birthday

Moon habitat party theme for a kid birthday at Habitat

I saw a documentary about the future of the Moon exploration this week-end. It hit me as a pretty cool birthday theme for a young boy or a girl.

I recalled the realistic Moon fixture that is a part of the Very Important Products for kids Collection by UK-retailer Habitat. So that is where I started my journey. By digging their Web site further I found everything at Habitat.

The key décor elements for this kid party are the Moon pendant, the Inflatable plane, a couple of Kids bunk beds, Smoothy Monster and a red Flip Kids for playing. Just to make things more exciting for you, Smoothy Monster is creation by French fashion designer Christian Lacroix.

Recreate the beach club atmosphere at home

Kids Chesapeake Cabana, peg rack and bench by Pottery Barn

Beach cabanas remind me of vacation. You feel pamper and relax when you are lying beneath one. It helps you create an intimate space on a large beach.

When you use a cabana as a pool dressing room, it adds nostalgia and panache to your pool area. Beach cabanas are not just for adults, kids enjoy them too. Cabanas are fun. Moreover, you take control of the mess.

The overall design principles I explained here still apply to adult spaces. I concentrated on the kid version since it is less typical to build stylish décor for kids.

What do you need to do it?

Pottery Barn carried the Kids Chesapeake Cabanas this year that were so cool – they went out of stock pretty fast. Imagine when you host a swimming play date, the kids have their own spot to change and store their stuff. As the kids arrive, write their name on a chalkboard inside a picture frame. Name tags on the cabanas let everyone knows where to put their belongings.

Kids' rooms are a part of better entertaining

kids' room portfolio of New York interior designer Amie Weitzman

The first rule when you having guests over at your house is to have a clean, well presented house.

On the style front, families with young kids have a harder time making it a reality. With both parents working, kids are often allow to play anywhere in the house. Parents and children naturally want to pass more time closer together. But having toys taking over the living room is no way to entertain.

The best thing to do is to design fabulous kid rooms with defined play area. You do not necessary need a larger home to do it although having more square footage always helps. I believed that with good planning and creativity, you can always find a solution.

Mothers put lots of efforts in creating fun bedrooms for her kids. My mother liked to redesign my bedroom every two or three years and I cherished these memories. But nothing beats the work of professional designed kid rooms.

Who says that kid furniture cannot be cool?

Forget Disney, forget Fisher price and forget Sears. Most of the things that are made for children look tacky or out of place in a grown up room. This is specially if you live in a modern architecture house.

Although I do not want children of my own, the question interests me as an interior designer and from an entertaining point of view. New design options have popped up in the last couple of years. Most of them have been developed by parents that did not want in their house the standard kid stuff.

I found on the Babygadget blog, a post that can help parents that still want to live in style with children. The Shoji sofa, available at Inmod, is a perfect throwback to Palm Springs in the 1950’s. The price of this living room set for kids is $857.99, an odd number to match this unusual kid furniture.
