Shopping at IKEA for the new office

shopping at ikea

With the walls in two tones of blues and the doors painted red, I selected red to be my accent color. Our furniture is beech veneer with a few black pieces.

I went to IKEA tonight to purchase the new IKEA 365+ BRASA pendant lamp in red. I like the shape. I checked the inventory online and they were supposed to have it stock. Unfortunately, there were two black lamps plus one white but no red lamp in sight.

I was glad that I noticed a red KULLA pendant lamp in a dining room setting as I entered the store. I like the fact that the cord and the ceiling attachment were also red. Moreover, KULLA has a plate covering the globe. Since we will walk under the pendant, hiding the globe is a tempting feature. KULLA will do.

I stocked a few red storage boxes, 5 light blue eating bowls and red small SALONG vases to decorate a black and beech Expedit bookcase that we already have. I plan to make a row of light blue bowls and a row of red vases.

In Love with Orla Kiely's furniture at Heals

Even if the mid 20th Century furniture design trend is showing fatigue I still still fond of the look. I guess it is an unconditional love. I love that style since I was seven. And my passion is nourished by the fact that the style does not fit my current house. In fact, I never live with the style.

orla kiely dining room furniture a theal's

Launched in the 1990's, the world of Orly Kiely is one where color, pattern, graphics, texture and rhythm continually reinvent themselves. London-based Orla Kiely continues to be popular amongst the women blogosphere.

Over the years, she has teamed with many brands to produce products with her unique designs. Orla Kiely for Heal's is an exclusive and distinctive range of furniture. The line reflects both the designer’s work and Heal's core values. The dining room furniture is crafted out of solid American black walnut.

Everything on that picture, including the doormat, are exclusive to the UK retailer Heal’s. Coincidence: This dining room furniture line is a favorite of Living etc, my all-time favorite magazine.

Colors for the New Office

new office colors

We are moving to a new office space in two weeks. This explains why I have been less active on my blog as I am dealing with suppliers and must coordinate the work to be done before the move.

The painters are scheduled for Monday. Our office space is basically a large rectangle. The front, open space room plus a closed office at the back. There is a closed room with no window that will be use for storage.

This is the office of the Web development company of my husband and I. The closed office will be my husband’s office. I will have a desk on his office for when I stop by the office. Since I became a full-time blogger, I work most of the time from my home office.

Let have a look at the colors. The closed office gets lots of sunshine. The main front room only gets artificial lights. I choose colors from Benjamin Moore. It is funny. I did not find any office on Personal Colour Viewer of Benjamin Moore. I selected:

  • Tear drop blue 2050-60 (pale) for the main room walls
  • Blue Lake 2053-40 for the sunny closed office and the back wall of the main room
  • Cream silk 2146-60 on all ceiling
  • Red Tulip 2146-60 for the two doors and door trims

Cool Winter Rooms by CB2

These styled rooms shout winter in a hip yet comfortable way. Let's look at what make them special.

cb2 winter solstice :: glass mercury christmas trees

The glass trees are not a new concept but they fit well in a modern living room or dining room. Select one color or assemble a forest of pink, olive and silver mercury sleek glass Christmas trees.

cb2 living room for winter entertaining

I like the big dipper arc lamp and the fireplace are gorgeous. It has a 70s vibe that I cherished. Hot during the same era, the versatility of fondues makes it the perfect no-fuss entertaining dish. Fondue is more than a meal; it is a social activity. Moreover, I do not know one person who does not enjoy it.

Open Plan Living Design

living etc elegant through room

This is one of the most popular home design trend, especially for family with young kids. And it is normal since it allows the cook(s) to be with everyone. I gathered on Living etc. successful open plan living rooms.

Living etc. is a great source of inspirations. And they acknowledged it by providing their online users to browse through their vast photo galleries.

A split level by a few steps adds elegance and interest to the open living design (top picture). This is the best view. And when you sit down in the living room for the digestive, your guests can sit down and not see the kitchen mess. I like it because they would not insist on doing the dishes.

Preview of Living Etc December 2008 Issue

living etc december 2008

From what I have seen, the December issue is packed with Christmas decoration ideas for a stylish, modern home. Their Christmas issue is always a treat because they come up with fresh ideas.

Shopping guides for traditional and contemporary wreaths plus amazing baubles and star ornaments. Living etc likes to showcase super size accessories. This year, they found giant gold Christmas balls.

You do not need a mantel to hang Christmas socks for all the family. Learn to create a Christmas tree with Post-It leaves. This is a great option if you live in a small space. They also suggest punch of neon colors in several pages.

Living etc delivers modern British Christmas Glamour at its best. I will wait patiently for the arrival of the December 08 Living etc in a magazine stand near me.

Food Photographic Prints

Every room needs some type of art pieces. Hanging framed photos of food or kitchen tools is a simple way to decorate your kitchen.

Canadian photographer Jennifer Squires, an Etsy seller, contacted me by email this morning. She introduced me to her beautiful photos of Greece. Maybe it is because it is lunchtime, but her sandwich shot caught my attention. I like the way she captured these close-up views of everyday food. Her photos invite you to cook.

Most of her fine art photographs can be produced as large as 24x30 inches or as small as 4x6 inches.

I like the Halloween porch spotted last week by Sabina of Barefood in the Orchard. I could not find any details on where this picture came from. If you have a talent for designing scenes, it used props that are widely available.

Why not revive the 70s candle in the wine bottles? Finish the vignette with artificial web. You cannot find something easier to do.

Preview of November 2008 Living etc

november 2008 living etc dare to be different houses

The November 2008 edition of Living etc is all about stylish use of bold colors. It shows houses that break the rules in a good way.

What I enjoy about Living etc is that the houses are realistic. These happy family houses look live in with flair.

The Fritz Hansen Egg chair, designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1958, looks amazing recovered in Trezzini fabric from Designers Guild. This is a chair I wish I could afford for my home office.

The dark blue hallway uses a trick of the trade to make a room look bigger. The door handles and wall switches are painted the same colors of the walls. The key is to achieve a seamless look.

Stylish Yet Witty Bookends

cool bookends :: clity slickers :: reading sophisticates :: growing together wall shelf with tube vases

These are the proof that bookends do not have to be boring. The bookend sets are definitively out of the ordinary. They would bring style and a theatrical sense of humor in your home décor.

City Slickers Bookends position the three figurines dressed with blazers and caps to give the illusion that they are walking through the books. Reading Sophisticates feature an urban chic man and a woman, each absorbed in their book. It is good to know that Wrapables offers volume discount on bookends.

Chris Collicott designed a leaning version and a pushing version of his bookend men. They exhibit an art deco influence.

Another cute item is the skeleton key rack. It measures 8 inches in width. Hooks can be handy to hang keys or small notes. This is a brand new item that looks vintage.

Both items are sold at Three Potato Four, a store with cool vintage style stuff.

Introducing Wee Birdy

wee birdy :: rose bakery tower carrot cake :: geninne zlatkis bird botanical prints :: tim walker poster

I want to start the week peacefully. So this is a feel good post.

I discovered a couple weeks ago this fabulous field guide to the good stuff in London, UK. An Australian-born freelance journalist writes Wee Birdy. Her blog is filled with local food places and indie shops.

To give you an idea, I select three of my favorite from her recent posts.

+ Looking at this tower carrot cake from Rose Bakery, I see a similarity with my muffin presentation. So naturally, I love it!

+ The Bird botanical prints by Geninne Zlatlkis, made exclusively for Three Potato Four, complement the carrot cake view. The serenity of the Japanese Lantern is good for the mind and soul.

Modern Round Furniture

mr impossible chair and oclock at the conran shop

I saw those on the 2008 catalogue of the Conran Shop.

I enjoyed the fun design of Mr Impossible Chair by Philippe Starck. Mr Impossible (it is a reference to him, lately?) was launched at the 2007 Milan Furniture Fair.

Mr Impossible exhibits a tension between the opaque seat and the translucent base. The two parts are welded by laser so they stick together. I did not find the red chair the online store of Conran Shop.

At $5400 a piece, I will only admire the OClock designed by Anthny Duffeleer. But it looks really cool! The Stick lights by Michael Young will be available in Spring 2009.

My Ciao Montreal Interview at Ateliers et Saveurs

ciao montreal filmed at saveurs et ateliers in old montreal

A cool thing about doing TV interviews is that you discover new shows and new places. I watched last week episode before my interview and I like it.

About the TV Show

Ciao Montreal is a show hosted by young dynamic Italian women about what is going in Montreal that can interest the Italian community. The show covers lifestyle, nightlife, music, fashion, and entertainment. Natasha Gargiulo interviewed me about Halloween party ideas for grown ups.

Ciao Montreal also recorded from a different location in Montreal. This week, it was at a fabulous cooking, mixology and wine tasting school in the heart of Old Montreal called Ateliers et Saveurs. The calendar is mostly filled with workshops. The concept is to learn while having fun.

Decorating with Gray

decorating with gray walls :: bedding with silver metallic print

Gray is hot this autumn both in fashion and home décor. People are not used to put this color on walls. But gray produce amazing neutral walls. Depending on the hues you selected, the room can look warm or cold.

These pictures taken from Living etc. to infuse some industrial influence into your house have a lot of charms and even a sense of cosiness. After the smoky eyes, it is time for the smoky walls.

This season, think about muted grays and blues, silver leaf finishes, a liquid-metal-edged quilt or a floral trellis and leaf pattern in muted metallic print for your bedding or a greenish gray wall.

My Design Challenge

I am thinking of using grays for our new office. Because I love bold color, I may apply on a small wall an orange wallpaper with a metallic large pattern that I saw at a wallpaper shop while walking in the street.

Tableware for Entertaining

Between each kitchen, you discover a few kitchenware and tableware items. If you are looking for Champagne flutes, you can choose between the SKIR mouth-blown flute with engraving or the very affordable SVALKA champagne flutes.

The SYNTES SKISS dinner plates are gorgeous. The series comes in 4 bowl sizes and 3 plate sizes.

7 Cool Desk Accessories

desk accessories :: filex :: cavanelli clothespins and clips :: recycled binders

I received my FILEX Emma by International Arrivals this week. It looks even better for real. This inspired to go on a quest to find the coolest desk accessories.

I cannot guarantee any of those will stimulate you to work harder but I know you will feel joyful if you surround your desk with cute and whimsical office supplies.

Be Kind to the Earth

Grass Roots is a good source. I found a mini blue box that fits in the palm of your hand and recycled binders there.

Did you know that you could repurpose the ring metals affixed with two screws and t-nuts instead of putting them in the trashcan when the corrugated cardboard binders are too worn?

For Organization

Besides the FILEX folders, the Task clips are pretty cool. You can get the Utility Clips (Do, File, Send, Read), the Timing Clips (Now, Tomorrow, This Week, Someday), and the Importance Task Clips (Urgent, Important, Can Wait, Trivial).

I Love the Divine McHale Chandeliers

chandeliers by michael mchale designs :: batch bakery in west village, new york

Glamour and enchanting are not the first two words that come to your minds if I tell you about a chandelier made of distressed pipe fittings and exquisite Swarovski crystals. But that is exactly what you feel looking at the handcrafted chandeliers by Michael McHale Designs.

Not a New Concept

I saw McHale Chandeliers one year ago but for some reasons forgot to talk about them. I do prefer McHale Chandeliers to the Cellula Chandelier introduced in 1996, even the colored versions. The more artistic arrangement of colored crystals makes McHale Chandeliers more fun and divine.

Each Piece is Unique

Besides the materials, what can stand these ones apart is the fact that no two are totally the same. Each piece is treated like a unique sculpture.

Introducing the Modernism Art Wallpapers by Bradbury & Bradbury

Modernism Art Wallpapers by Bradbury & Bradbury :: gee gee nouveau interlock stardust aeroplane

Since the Holidays season is getting closer, I will talk more about interior design as many wish to update their home décor. I start with wallpapers.

Wallpapers as Temporary Decor

For an event, you can use wallpapers to create the right ambiance without gluing them to your walls. Think about how stores display wallpapers on their storefront windows for inspirations. You wish to create a theatre set not a permanent installation.

You can simply hang them from the top and let the roll fall down. Wallpapers can be used as a runner on a dining table or buffet table.

Four Modernism Collections

If you enjoy 50’s or 60’s modern style, check out the bold Mod Generation papers from the 1960s and the retro Atomic Age papers from the 1950s. Stay away for the Post-War Era papers from the 1940s unless you are doing a kitsch room.

Cute and Smart Storage Solutions in Montreal

smart storage :: box for clothes :: jewelry box :: document boxes

A friend J. asked me yesterday where she could find cute storage boxes in Montreal. She asked for something similar to what is available at The Container Store. Here are the places I suggest.

For the Home

  • California Closets in Westmount
  • Au Printemps – three stores: Montreal, Outremont and Westmount
  • The Bay, downtown Montreal – the House and Home collection is interesting but I did not check lately their inventory.
  • IKEA carries a surprising collection.

For Your Desk

  • The most complete Semikolon product range in Montreal is probably at Essence du Papier, three stores in Montreal
  • Multimags on Saint-Laurent Blvd, before Prince-Arthur, carries a small collection that is worth a visit.

Gift Wrap Station at Pottery Barn

Wall-Mounted Craft Organizer at Pottery Barn

It is not the first time that I am telling you this: I wish for a gift-wrapping station at home. A place where I could hang my big wrapping paper rolls and neatly store label holders, ribbons and so on.

The Wall-Mounted Craft Organizer at Pottery Barn gives me all that with an upper shelf to keep the tapes, scissors and ribbons. Four dowels drop into slots to hold wrapping paper rolls.

The bottom picture shows a craft room that almost feels like a little shop. It is charming. Baskets are a great way to store paper pieces, bags and boxes. I like to glue decorative elements near the bows. I guess I could repurpose glass jars from the grocery store.

All these are all charming. With the Holiday season that is coming up soon, I wish I would find the time to setup my own gift station. If I do, you will be the first to know about it.

From Turbine Room to a Hip Condo Unit

turbine room convertion to condo unit at The Whitney :: weehouse

I enjoy reading the Home and Garden section of The New York Times because they showcase amazing homes.

This week, The New York Times featured a couple who moved from a great rent-control apartment located on an upscale New York City’s neighborhood to renovate two basement units that used to be the turbine room of the old Standard Mill in Minneapolis. It is quite a change of pace.

The Needs

The owners are a couple who now runs their business from home. They operate Hopkins-Baumann, an editorial design studio for magazine and book publishers.

The couple wanted to fit a business office, a guest suite, a kitchen, a media room and a professional library on top of the standard home amenities in 2600 square feet.
