September 2007 Entries
This week I made two boards. The first one celebrates autumn at the cottage. It reminds me of the spectacular views delivered by the Canadian forests at this time of the year.
1 | Hostess with the Mostess for New stuff at Zanisa
These natural slate boards available at Zanisa become markers. Little wooden pegs let them stand vertically or horizontally. Use a chalk to identify dishes at a buffet or use them as nameplates at your table. Pretty cool accessories for the party celebrating the end of the cottage season. These markers are from the new collection at Zanisa featured by Hostess with the Mostess this week.
2 | Shelterrific for on the table: flowers, fabric and more
I am a proud owner of similar birch tubes from Small Stump. Naturally, I am a fan. The On the table: flowers, fabric and more post displayed them all dressed up with a ribbon next to a wooden birdhouse as a table marker.
A charming setting that was realized by Angela M., the founder and editor of Shelterrific. The flowers reveal the typical Fall color palette of our forests.
3 | Housemartin for Willy Wonka's bathtub
Some great modern vases are styled against vintage, rusty tools. I like the textured wooden vases filled with wild flowers. These pictures are from the Autumn Winter 2007 / 2008 catalogue of Zara Home in Europe.
About Willy Wonka's bathtub, it is quite industrial. Not really what I have in mind when it came to a bathroom design.
I should publish my second weekly mood board featuring posts from other bloggers tomorrow Monday.

If you wish to create awareness for a cause, throwing a party around your cause is a great idea.
For the fight against Breast Cancer, you can plan a dessert buffet or a tea party in the afternoon with your girlfriends.
I fell in love with the cute cupcakes by Sprinkles Cupcakes a few months ago. From October 1 to 14, they will donate the proceeds of the sales of their Pink Ribbon strawberry cupcakes to the Entertainment Industry Foundation’s Women’s Cancer Research Fund. During that period, the strawberry flavor will be available every day.
Modern decor, refined style and strong packaging
Frankly, the retro look so typical of cupcake bakeries look tired; we need more varieties. Here come Sprinkles Cupcakes that opened its first shop in Beverly Hills in 2005. At last, a fresh and modern architecture boutique décor.
Sprinkles developed two signature looks; each one is fabulous for any party. Who can resist the cool fondant dot on a flavored buttercream frosting? And pouring monochromatic French chocolate sprinkles adds sophistication to the small cake. Unusual flavors like chai latte and ginger lemon coexist with the classic mocha, carrot and vanilla. There is something for everyone taste.
How Sprinkles Cupcakes add even more elegance to your party?
1 | An array of special decorations for custom made cupcakes
Your cupcakes can be decorated with any of the 24 cutout shapes representing vegetation, animals, emotions, items or occasions.
For a 70’s party theme, the Peace and Love sign is so a propos. And with all the violence in our world, why not host a party to embrace peace at every level of our life? The Peace sign is perfect for a New Year’s Eve party. The Tree can symbolize the environment or simply be a Christmas ornament. The custom made cupcakes have a low minimum order of a dozen per decoration.
2 | The party tray and the cupcake tower
Sprinkles sells a custom made cupcake tray with so much flair that it can replace a birthday cake. Send or bring the Sprinkles cupcake tray filled with a dozen cupcakes firmly in place in the cute gift box. The tray can be recycled as a votive candle holder or stored until your next batch of cupcakes.
You can serve 2 to 3 dozens of cupcakes with a three-tiered cupcake tower. Buy the tower with the ribbon kit for $15 USD or add your own ribbon and buy the cupcake tower at $10.
3 | The favor box
At the end of the event, it is nice to thank your friends that made a donation. Nothing is more efficient than a little incentive. Let them bring home a cupcake in a favor box.
If you do not have time to throw a party, you can still make our friends aware of your support to the fight against Breast Cancer. You could send one Pink Ribbon strawberry cupcake with a donation form and a note card to a list of friends. This unexpected gesture is sure to get their attention.
Locations of Sprinkles Cupcakes
Right now, there are 4 locations in the United States with 15 more scheduled boutiques. These cupcakes are popular amongst celebrities. Beverly Hills, Newport Beach, Dallas and Phoenix-Scottsdale are the lucky residents that can enjoy Sprinkles Cupcakes at the moment.
If you live to far, you can buy online neatly packaged cupcake mixes for $14. Stock a few cylinders in any of the 6 flavors since the cupcake mix makes a remarkable hostess gift.

A mingling ritual at casual parties is certainly doing the dishes.
Cleaning the dishes comes in play before and after a party. So it works best when the host is prepared. I compiled my top three tips to best distribute the work load.
1 | Do not accumulate before the party
Clean all the dishes you used to prepare your meals. I suggest you do the dishes by hand at this stage. The idea is to always start your event with an empty dishwasher and uncluttered counter space.
After the first course, simply put everything in the dishwasher and your counter will stay spotless. If you own an ultra quiet dishwasher, run a washing cycle as soon as the dishwasher reached the 75% full mark. Then you will be ready to start a full cycle with the main course dishes at the end of the event.
2 | Let your friends help you if they offered
If you host a casual event with 8 or more friends, usually 1 or 2 friends will instinctively start to do the dishes while you are cooking and plating the meals. Etiquette wise, it is best to not ask for help unless you are in trouble. If there is no dishwasher, guests should definitely share the cleaning chores.
When you are with good friends, they will start before you even noticed, so leave the dish liquid soap near the sink. Prepare a basket with your best tea towels. Store the basket under neat the sink until someone started doing the dishes. This way your guests do not feel obligated to clean up.
If you own a dishwasher, make sure to tell your friends that they do not have to wash everything by hand. I usually told my guests to simply rinse the plates. I found out that two runs of dishwasher are plenty to clean all the dinnerware and serving ware for a twelve-guest dinner party. You start one before you go to bed, the other before breakfast and no one could tell you hosted a big party the night before.
3 | Getting rid of the cooking smells
Open the window to change the air before your guests arrive. Make sure to cook with the fan on at the appropriate level.
Scented candles, potpourris, diffusers and air fresheners come handy. Try to avoid sweet scents before a dinner party. I found out that fruits and vegetables scents do miracles in the kitchen. Just like perfume on you, scented candles and air fresheners should not overpower the room. And now, the air refresher is coupled with the dish soap bottle.
Introducing the new Dawn Simple Pleasures
The dish soap industry is competitive and they market innovative features to sell more of their brand. Procter & Gamble just introduced Dawn Simple Pleasures, a Dawn dish liquid bottle with an air freshener. For over a decade, I trust Dawn to wash my dishes because I think it delivers the best cleaning power on the market. I am curious to see how good are their air fresheners?
A two in one product is handy because it does not overcrowd your counter. You just peel off the seal to enjoy the air freshener. There is need to plug it in, to refill it or to put some oil on it. Dawn Simple Pleasures can become your affordable aromatherapy solution while you are doing the dishes. I still need to smell it to make up my mind about the benefits of this feature.
Dawn Simple Pleasures is only available in the United Stated for the moment. I expect the fruity scents, Lemon & Tangerine or Apple & Pear, to be the best buys. The third scent is Water Lilly & Jasmine. Smells are a personal experience, so trust your nose. And if you are happy with the smell after a while, know that the air freshener section is removable.
If you tried Dawn Simple Pleasures, I am interested to hear your views about this new product.

Halloween is a celebration for kids but grownups can have their fun too. Instead of a typical party costume party, why not organize a Victorian Gothic bash this year?
Everyone can dress up nicely. You can host a formal dinner or opt for the food station formula. The 2007 October issue of Martha Stewart's Living proposes wonderful ideas for decorating your space.
To not be stressed out, you can start planning your Halloween event soon. At least, send a Save the Date note to your friends.
Making our own floral arrangement
Going Dutch teaches you how to reproduce a floral display reminiscent of the seventeenth-century master gardener.
I am aware that it is before the Victorian era, but I think both styles complement each other. Since Halloween party is about the paranormal, there is no harm done in mixing periods.
One trick to save money and space if you put the floral arrangement against the wall is to leave the back bare.
How to create a sideboard Victorian Gothic tableau for Halloween?
The sideboard vignette clearly stated that it is an adult event. Luminous carved and etched pumpkins, traditional wine decanters, pewter serving ware, stands with fresh fruits and nuts are the key elements.

You can visit antiquaries, countryside markets and specialized boutiques to find pewter and other metal serving ware. Otherwise, you can rent them. But displaying several large pieces is crucial to achieve this look. If the style of your sideboard does not fit, get a neutral damask or vintage linen tablecloth to camouflage your sideboard.

With the popularity of my post about the Plexiglas chandeliers by Incidence, the search for retailers goes on. My search was in vain until now.
I have to thank my husband Jerome for this discovery. An avid gamer, he wanted to go to an event for the launch of Halo 3 in Montreal. On our way over there, we passed a small retailer on Mont-Royal Avenue East. I looked at the window where I saw a multitude of chandeliers and lamps hanging from the ceiling like colorful stars.
I immediately recognized the collection of Incidence chandeliers spread around the small shop. Eureka! Boutique artisanale Un monde is often referred to as an Ali Baba’s cave because the shop is full of treasures and silky materials that make you dream. That fits the bill.

The search for retailers in the USA and EU is still going on. If you know one retailer (brick-and-mortar or online), please pass on the information.

The eco-friendly girl in me relies most of the time on linen napkins at dinner party. But I still stock some paper napkins because their drawings add an instant impact to the table.
Develop your theme from the paper napkins
If you do not know what theme to use for an event, a simple trick is to get your inspiration from the illustrations on paper napkins. From there, develop your theme by accentuating key elements.
The best way to reduce the stress of impromptu entertaining is to be prepared. Opt for motifs that create an instant mood. The jewels of paper napkins are usually found at your local specialized boutiques or the Web.
When you see one motif that really grabs your attention, think how it can fit with your dinnerware. If you can imagine a look, buy right away a pack or two. This way, you can quickly design a stunning table all the time. Build also a reserve of cocktail napkins.
A charming French baker theme
I feel romantic and definitely French these days. Yesterday, I bought Petits fours when I was in Sutton. I also felt in love with the utensils on Dinner at Eight.
Paula Scaletta is the artist behind Petits fours. I dig for more of her creations on the Web. I found that you can get affordable art prints, coasters and paper napkins with her drawings.
A stunning collection of Botticino decorative tile coasters designed by artist Paula Scaletta are available via Studio Vertu. I did not find a specific retailer.
A quick tip of how to mix and match
The coasters and the two napkins I selected complement each other. When you try to mix and match decorative items, start with items that share a common atmosphere. Look at commonalities between the epoch and the art techniques. Target a harmonizing color palette since it often looks more refined.

Who said literacy has not place in party? This week’s mood board is about throwing Read & Write parties. You can host a book reading, a short story writing session, a book review tea party or a Haiku party.
Or books can simply be the gifts of honor. Books and Brunch is an amazing party concept. It is original and yet so simple to implement as a parent baby shower. Here, the new parents will be surprised with their baby’s library full on the best children’s classic.
The concept can be applied to any occasion. A teenager may want to grow his graphic novel collection for his birthday while cooking or home decorating books fit into the bridal shower spirit.
1 | Peoples Paper for DIY + Snow and Graham = Utterly Stylish!
Any party starts with the invites. Alphabet imprints from Snow & Graham make outstanding invitations at a fraction of the price of a custom job. All you need is a laser or inkjet printer to print your message. Thanks to Peoples Paper for publishing DIY + Snow and Graham = Utterly Stylish!, a post that highlighted this wonderful collection.
Ramillette imprint is shown here for a sleep over birthday party. Why not mix it with a Haiku party?
2 | Oh Happy Day for Party Ideas
A Haiku party would be a hit if you have friends that enjoy writing. This form of Japanese poetry was developed around a 5, 7, 5 structure.
According to Wikipedia, some of the more common practices in English are:
- Use of three (or fewer) lines of no more than 17 total syllables;
- Use of a season word;
- Use of a cut (sometimes indicated by a punctuation mark) to contrast and compare, implicitly, two events, images, or situations.
Poetry is not my cup of tea. I first heard of a Haiku party when reading a post about Party Ideas on Oh Happy Day blog. In all fairness, Black Eiffel introduced the Haiku party idea on her post Parties I have known and loved by Kim Screen.
To duplicate this cool Haiku party, you need a typewriter, a cork bulletin board with pins and lots of white cards. The proposed formula is simply to type 3 lines of 5, 7 and 5 syllables. Then, post your haiku on the cork board. If you cannot get your hand on a typewriter, a few pens or a calligraphy kit will work fine.
3 | Better Living Through Design for HANG Wall Hooks
Whether it is to hang purses or coats, the Hang Wall Hooks fit so well into our read and write party themes that I had no choice but to include it. I noticed them on Better Living Through Design.
The rules of my weekly column: 3 blogs and a mood board
Each Saturday, I selected three blog posts. The challenge for me is that I must create a mood board with pictures that other bloggers have posted in the last 7 days. The mood board must stay within the scope of my blog.

How do you do it? Simple, you start with the layout.
Before you think about finishes and esthetic framework, it is best to have a clear answer to How you like to cook and entertain within your kitchen?
Even if the shape of the room is a key factor, the layout of your kitchen must first be tailored to suit your lifestyle. After a few months, the love affair with your kitchen will flourish only if you enjoy cooking meals in it.
Meeting with your kitchen designer
By far, casual entertaining is the most popular form of dining party. But easy entertaining means different things to people. So make sure you portray well the way you like to entertain when you meet your kitchen designer.
When you are renovating or designing a house, you need to be prepared to be flexible. Your space may be able to accommodate only your second best kitchen layout. If you express well your priorities, an excellent kitchen designer will be able to create a kitchen that meets your wish list.
Casual entertaining kitchen design
Do you prefer to prepare the meals with 1 or 2 cooks yet you want to have your friends around? Do you want to have a separate kitchen and dining room?
If you like to throw parties like Make your own pizza night!, your kitchen needs to accommodate lots of people all at once. These are the types of questions that you must discuss before starting the project.
Do not worry about the mess unless you entertain 2 to 4 guests. With a larger group, the mess is not really an issue with casual entertaining because there will always be one person in a group that will do the dishes while your preparing the meal. That type of party is about having a good time with friends, so no one will really notice the mess if they are having fun.
A quick look at bulthaup
With bulthaup, beauty radiates from functionality. This German manufacturer displays on its Web site attractive spaces for casual dining. These are the types of kitchen I dream of. But unless I move, this layout is impossible in my house. So I got the second best option and I am happily living after with my kitchen layout.
bulthaup is also about dining room. Casual dining can look trendy. Whether you prefer c3, korpus or duktus, the product lines in bulthaup's communication series will enrich your space. The mix and old look is typical of casual entertaining.

I like collecting recipe cards. This is one of the things that you never seem to have enough. I try to find original illustrated models.
I found these on etsy. Stovetopics is the recipe card brand of pinkbathtub. You will get a baker's dozen, 13 beautiful cards for $11 USD. What is interesting is that each card has its own drawing and short phrase.
You can find other illustrated themes like pasta, blueberry and wine & dine at her etsy shop. These collections start at $4.50 USD for a set of 5.
Like I said, we always need more recipe cards. I still preferred to write down on paper my recipes because I find it is more convenient when I am cooking.
Whether it is for you or to include in a hostess gift, take a look at these recipe cards.

I came across Thaw by Mathmos Lights while reading The Notebook blog on Monday.
This company from United Kingdom sells unique lightning products internationally. Mathmos Lights all share a whimsical touch.
Setting the mood with Space Projector
This is a cool affordable gadget, perfect for a dance party. You get everything you need when you buy the Space Projector. The machine and a set of graphics come in the box.
A variety of young designers draw the graphic packs. You can pick the best styles for your party. Basically, you project on a wall or ceiling with interruptions a moving image up to 1.5 meter wide. Choose between 7 graphic themes and 4 oil wheels. The space projector is available in a translucent or a silver finish.
If you want to replicate a psychedelic night club atmosphere, get the oil wheel plus several Fluidium lamps. Fluidium is the update of the lava lamp. And revive the spirit of Austin Powers for a night.
Ice, water and melting process viewed in three candle lights
What if you decide to play with the nature elemental components? That is a little what Mathmos tried to do with three candlelight designs. They pieces will not pass unnoticed.
1 | Ice candlelight with Thaw
You freeze an ice cylinder around the tea candle. It takes 8 hours to freeze the ice structure and about three hours for it to melt.
With Christmas and the winter season coming in a few months, I suggest you buy them early.
2 | Water movement and wind simulation effects with Float
Fill the vase with water. As the candle floats in the water it castes a moving shadow patterns on the surface. I enjoy the dynamic effects.
3 | Candlelight interconnection with Melt
Melt is a wax based candle holder system. You can rotate and join together several Melt candle holders to create patterns. Use to your imagination and design flair to create your unique composition for a centerpiece. This may be the less flamboyant of the three candle lights by Mathmos but if you are clever about Melt, the resulting look can be amazing.

The naive jack-o'-lantern of your childhood does not suffice anymore. Like everything else in life, Halloween decors took on a sophisticated trail.
We may have to thank Martha Stewart for putting more pressure on us. But when you look at the results, the extra efforts are worth it. You start by grouping pumpkins to make a table centerpiece or an outdoor vignette.
With a little skill and patience, everyone can reproduce these striking pumpkins. The October issue of Martha Stewart Living comes with all the templates and a full set of instructions with the tools you need. A version of Denizens of the Dark is also available online.
A few shopping tips
Look at your space and select the best place to set your vignette. Use the provided templates or draw your own. Figure out how many pumpkins you will need based on your overall composition and your space layout before you hit the farm stand or the pumpkin patch. Bring your templates with you. If it is your first attempt at etching, buy a couple extra pumpkins to practice.
Stop by the garden center and buy moss. The idea is to create a scene so do not neglect the small decorative elements. Putting moss under and surrounding the pumpkins is crucial to create natural scenery. Better yet, brush some yogurt on the surface, mist often to create an aging look. Some people suggest mixing the moss with yogurt. Try to temporary aging the walls and the rest of your decor.
If you are really into it, you can mix insect props, fall vegetables and other Halloween décor items. You can buy them or rent several pieces at a prop shop near you.
Opt for pumpkins of the right sizes and shapes with slightly flat faces because it is easier to transfer the designs on them. Varying the sizes and shapes of the pumpkins usually looks better.
Etching versus carving
You mix these two techniques to vary the illuminations of your composition. That is a huge part of the Wow factor. Varying the depth of etching is little bit like varying the line strength on a drawing. What you should recall is that the more pared skin, the brighter the design will glow.
Some suggestions on how to proceed
The outdoor scenes full of watchful ravens, screeching cats, and fluttering moths will please children and adults. Do not overlook key design elements. For example, the rickety picked fence unites the row of three pumpkins in a depiction of a farmer's field. If it is your first time, I suggest you start by replicating Martha’s vignettes. It is best to gain some experience before thinking of designing your own Halloween scenes.
Apparently, you will be able to enjoy your carved pumpkins until the Thanksgiving celebrations in the United States. For your information, we celebrate Thanksgiving the second Monday of October in Canada.
Organize a carving event
Getting help will reduce your stress and add fun to the whole thing. So do not be shy and invite a few friends to participate in the pumpkin carving. It is a fun afternoon activity. Plan a dinner after the carving session to thank your friends.
Why not distribute the flyaway favors that night? This is another impressive creation from Martha’s team. Fill a brown paper bag with candies. Cut thin strips into a second lunch bag and make sure you stop short of the base. Place the bag filled with candies inside the cut bag. Insert a small branch with an inch or two inside the bag. Cinch the tops of both bags and secure with black twine.

Why French Chefs master the art of cooking? This is a question that can open many debates.
One thing for sure, the Chefs in France place a superior level of attention to the techniques, the taste and the food presentation.
The culinary creations of Philippe Conticini will not change my mind about my love affair with French cooking. Imagine the Wow factor around your guests if you were to hire a caterer that served desserts like those.
About his style, his philosophy
Philippe Conticini relies on his audacity, his techniques, the tradition and finally his intuition to invent his creations.
What distinguishes a Chef from all of us is that a true Chef knows how to play with every aspect of taste and texture. They often used a wide variety of flavors to achieve the look and taste they are looking for. For him, gastronomy is a game of flavors whether he does a dish, a terrine or a dessert.
A look at some of his creations
The balls filled with Nutella were created in 2005 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Nutella in France.
The leaf shaped pastry bites are so beautiful. The macarons look mouthwatering. And I want to sink my teeth into the fig and fruit skewers possibly topped with coconut, sesame seeds, salt and pepper.
Dishing looks that you can steal from Philippe Conticini
We reuse some of these food presentations at home. To keep things simple, make easy recipes that are popular with everyone. Add a twist in the way you present the food.
Serve honey donut balls in a paper cone. You could tie a raffia ribbon for a more finish look. This will make an ordinary dessert out of the ordinary.
Use these skewers that are widely available at Chinese shops to prepare fresh fruit brochettes. Set a couple of chocolate fondue pots and let your guests dip in the fruit brochettes. For a buffet, it is preferable to use a lower side and wider bowl than the usual chocolate fondue pot.
You can visit the Web site of Philippe Conticini to check out the rest of his photo gallery. You can find a few recipes in the Word of Mouth sections.

The brainchild of Parisian events entrepreneur Thierry Teyssier, Romaneira is out of ordinary. This is the third House of dreams establishment for Teyssier.
Every detail at Romaneira have been planned to make your stay at this hotel a unique experience. You can see that the owner used to organize events for living. Look at this story as the basis for two mood boards about casual entertaining.
A romantic and sophisticated picnic setting
Do you know a lot of hotels that set a picnic space like this one? Wow! You see that a lot of thoughts have been put to design the picnic space. All the comforts and charms you can dream of are concentrated in a simple, almost humble arrangement. Take notice because you can easily reproduce this look at the cottage.
The containers, the dishes, the linen fabrics display simple shapes. They are the proof that you do not need extravagant pieces to create a refined look. You need to be truthful to a feeling and to pursuit a harmonious look.
Maison des Comptoirs
Located on the Douro River, Romaneira takes advantage of the explorer heritage of Portugal. I went to Portugal for my Honeymoon and I recommend you visit it one day.
I am showing you the Maison des Comptoirs with its multiethnic design. The room decor is warm due to plenty of rich woods and the spicy colors of the walls.
The food presentation at the Chocolaterie (chocolate shop) is without pretension. You can taste a vast variety of cold and warm chocolate drinks and small homemade cakes.
These delightful recipes are by Philippe Conticini. My next post will be about the masterpiece creations of this notorious French Chef. You will not want to miss it.
The bottom picture is where you can taste Porto wines. The décor reminded me of an old school communal dining room. What a charming sight. Europeans excel at creating amazing environments with everyday pieces from the past. In all fairness, I must point out that their architecture plays a role in achieving the overall decor. But we can try to replicate the look here.
Casual entertaining
When you think about it, this post is a follow-up to last week-end 3 blogs and a mood board story. Why not try a party theme done around a warm, casual and familiar atmosphere next time you have friends over? Develop a menu with family secret recipes, keep it simple and enjoy the company of your guests.

Do you know what is popular this Fall in dinnerware? I will tell you in a series about the latest Fall collections to hit the stores.
If you are an avid reader of my blog, you will be surprised that I started my tour with Habitat, the store empire from United Kingdom.
Last January, Habitat mandated the young ceramic artist Concetta Gallo to design a range of dinnerware and serving ware for their brand. The results are impressive: a white bone china dinnerware collection full of contrasts and juxtapositions.
Bold patterns are in this Fall
Concetta Gallo came up with an artistic and fresh collection where precious gold finish coexists with drawings, photocopied photo effects and smooth graphic lines. As I show you last Friday with Genevieve Lethu, bold patterns are a popular trend for your table.
What in it the Concetta dinnerware collection?
Flowers, horses and home decor accessories form the key inspirations. One thing that is worth mentioning is that the dinner plates and the side plates are offered in two coordinated patterns. This means your table can look more interesting and unique. Large and medium serveware bowls complete the tabletop collection. I really like the overall look.
Concetta for your home decor
If you prefer to use these patterns for your home decor, you have choices. A rug, a cushion, two vases and a wall art print is available. I suggest you use them wisely. Do not overcrowd the room with all those at the same time unless you oppose the Concetta items to stronger pieces.

Calling Cards originated in the early part of the 19th Century but Mom & Dad calling cards are a modern day concept. Their popularity is growing constantly.
There is a good reason for that. Mom and Dad Calling cards are so handy when you are leaving your kid at a playdate. Many parents told me they wished calling cards had been around when their children were young.
A family affair
With the father taking a bigger role in the education of their children, having a card that works for both parents is often the most practical option. I was surprised to observe a lack of masculine designs on the market.
Penny People from Toronto listened to my suggestion. She emailed me yesterday about new patterns she introduced that are gender neutral. I want to spread the word.
The best models for fathers and parents
I feel that fathers and parents now have 5 gender neutral choices at Penny People. Dads and parents can choose between the latest blue or green Lulu, Jackson and the Blue Dots patterns. From the previous collection, Modern Green and So-chic Blue still look current.
Buy it for you, buy it for a friend
Calling cards can be a birthday present for a close friend or a relative who is a parent. Moms and dads will cherish their calling cards every time that hire a new babysitter or when their kids get invited to a playdate.
So why not give them a first batch? Make sure to check with the parents about allergies and birth dates. Names, address, cell phone number, child's allergies and birth dates typically appear on the calling cards.

This week's spotlight is about modernized versions of rustic country charms. Fall is the best time of the year to visit antique shops. My mood board mixed antiques, modern style and a Scandinavian connection.
1 | Purple Area for Oväntade kombinationer
With Oväntade kombinationer, the Swedish blog Purple Area shows us a perfect example of the coexistence of old and new.
The rustic island table steals the stage of this modern kitchen. The white washed old wood floor adds characters. Finally, remark what look like a reclaimed wood butcher block on the left side of the picture. Mix it together with an all stainless steel kitchen and you got the recipe for an impressive kitchen decor.
2 | Design to inspire for Sightseeing with Susan
The kitchen designer and blogger Susan Serra just came back from a trip to Denmark. She took pictures for Design to inspire and a few bloggers while on vacation. Sightseeing with Susan displays the treasures at Fil de Fer, an antique shop in Copenhagen. Most of Fil de Fer's inventory originated from France.
Old bottles are popular. If you can put your hand on beautiful old bottles, do not hesitate and grab them. Serve water, lemonade, ice tea and even punch in those. Vintage bottles will made a statement when you throw a party.
3 | The Kitchen Designer for Beautiful Kitchen Cabinetry - A Preview!
I was digging for a kitchen done with old craftsmanship qualities but produced today. After all, antiques are great but we do not always find what we need. Antique furniture can be unpractical for our lifestyle. That is why that most of times, people only accessorize with antiques.
The cliché What goes around, comes around certainly holds some truths. I found what I am looking for with Beautiful Kitchen Cabinetry - A Preview!. This post is a sneak preview of a new kitchen collection to be distributed by Susan Serra. I cannot wait to see the whole collection. In the meantime, you can read Susan’s blog, The Kitchen Designer for great advices and inspirations.
The rules of my weekly column: 3 blogs and a mood board
Each Saturday, I selected three blog posts. The challenge for me is that I must create a mood board with pictures that other bloggers have posted in the last 7 days. The mood board must stay true to the scope of my blog.

I have shown you earlier how to use dry ice at Halloween but what if you are looking for a creative idea to a formal event.
A caterer from Toronto, Encore Food with Elegance introduced the smoking pot at an event last February. At last, an original dishing idea that anyone can do at home.
How to do it?
You start by pouring a few small pieces of dry ice in a teapot filled with warm water. Instead of the lid, place a small bowl or a saucer such that the steam can escape from the top and the spout. For the finishing touch, add a scoop of sorbet or ice cream into the bowl or saucer. Voilà!

My husband Jerome really likes the idea of a Mad Scientist party theme. So he went online to gather tips and tricks on making drinks and decorative items with dry ice. I share his best finds with you.
Awesome Dry Ice Experiment Videos by Steve Spangler
The first experiment by Steve Spangler for News9 is cool. The graduated cylinders work so well with our Mad Scientist theme. Basically what you need to do is to pour the hot water and pour 2-3 small cubes of dry ice.
Add coloring tablets to look more mysterious. Or you can drop a bent light stick into your bubbling dry ice potion for a great eerie effect.
To have a continuous flow of bubbles, just a little bit of dish soap. Make sure to put the cylinder on larger container to catch the running bubbles. If you only have time to watch one video, I suggest watching the last one on the list, the one named More Dry Ice Experiments.
How to use dry ice in drinks and punches
First, you must buy food grade dry ice. Wait until everyone shows up since the effect of the dry ice on drinks is short. Keep the unused dry ice wrapped as much as possible. You need to buy it the day of the event; you can keep it in your freezer for up to 8 hours.
Pour smaller pieces of dry ice so the drink does not get too cold. For the biggest effect, warm pop and water. Wait until the dry ice is completely gone before serving the drinks. For more about safety issues, visit HauntYourHome.com.

This French company is sold around the world which makes Genevieve Lethu brand one of my favorites for my blog.
I spot this dinnerware through an advertisement on Le Journal de la Maison, a French magazine. I enjoy the mix of classic and modern design of the Corso fiorelli. The style is perfect for casual entertaining.
Featured on Genevieve Lethu's Autumn/Winter 2007 Magazine, the company talked about it in these terms:
Deep round shapes, pure lines, silky materials, a dinner service that you choose, as the clothes you wear.
The dinnerware line is quite completed with several options for plates, bowls and cups. Kitchen linens complete the look.

After the craft room, the ultimate luxury is a gift wrapping room. I shared the feeling. I used to wrap gifts for my business. So I am well aware of the needs to quickly wrap gifts with a stunning look.
I saw two stories on magazines about this topic lately. In its October issue, Canadian House & Home talks about less stressful and simpler it is when you got everything on hand.
Martha Stewart Living shows something more elaborate, in the typical Martha way. What I like about Martha’s craft room is that the design makes good use of the attic space.
Canadian House and Home gives tips that anybody can do in their own house or apartment. I mixed my own views for the best tips and tricks on how to live enjoyable gift wrapping sessions.
1 | Make a reserve of wrapping supplies
The first rule is to keep coordinated supplies on stock. Having several paper rolls, tissue papers, ribbons, bows, gifts bags, gift tags and greeting cards eliminate the need to rush to the store ever time you want to give a gift.
Look in your area; I know that some gift wrapping distributors have a shop where companies and sometimes individuals can buy wholesale their products. There is often a minimum $100 order. But you can create your own signature gift wrap. By mixing ribbon colors and sizes, you craft several versions of your look. They can even teach you how to make your own bows out of ribbons.
Do not neglect embellishments. I like to enhance the look with decorative fruits, leaves, tiny ornaments beads or charms. Keep several style of strings and rolls of colorful raffia ribbons that you mix with or use instead of fabric ribbons.
2 | Best storage solutions for gift wrap and tissue
You can slide rolls of gift wrap and sheets onto wall-mounted curtain rods or dowels. An umbrella stand or a high basket neatly contains gift wrap rolls. A retractable long shelf or a drawer can keep them flat. You can design several low rises on a cabinet; one for each occasion or paper style.
Tissue paper even more than wrapping paper will benefit from laying flat. I always try to plan a flat surface for them. Use cartons to separate the colors and easily grab the ones you need.
3 | The art of dividing
You can see that both styles of cabinets put a lot of emphasis in diving large shelves and drawers so everything is well-organized. You can buy systems or ask a carpenter to create the separators.
You do not need to go custom build if your budget does not allow it. I have seen great results with a readymade cabinet. Just personalize the interiors to meet your needs. The one I am showing you what taken from an episode of Sarah’s House TV show.
Read the two magazines for more tips. I hope these beautiful pictures inspired you to make your own gift wrapping station, whether is it in a linen closet, a bookcase or a whole room.

We all dream to be able to decorate cakes with like the pro instead of making all-buttercream cakes. If you are not a beginner cake decorator, you may be ready to learn the art of fondant and royal icing.
Before you invest in cake decorating classes, flip the pages of books to see if this is for you. I compiled a list of 4 excellent books.
They all received great reviews on Amazon.com by people that effectively tried to make the cakes. And they passed my tests for the aesthetic and the usefulness of their instructions.
Spectacular Cakes: Special Occasion Cakes for any Celebration by Mich Turner
Mich Turner's credentials include wedding cakes for Madonna, Pierce Brosnan, Paul McCartney, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. In November 2005, her first book Spectacular Cakes was published. She wrote a second book which will hit the store on November 6, 2007.
Her book, Spectacular Cakes goes over cake decoration styles and techniques from the traditional to the cutting edge. Mich Turner's book supplies cake recipes plus a portfolio of incredible cake designs with step-by-step that you can copy or adapt to suit any formal or informal event.
Cakes to Dream On: A Master Class in Decorating by Colette Peters
The second book of Colette Peters targets serious home bakers and chefs. But this book cannot be a source of inspirations for all of us. I saw some easy to understand graphics via the See Inside feature of Amazon. The instructions and techniques seem easy to grasp. The difficulty, I thing, comes from the execution.
Cakes to Dream On unveils how to construct a multi-tiered cake, from determining serving sizes and choosing appropriate cake pans to making fillings, and ultimately stacking layers so they don't tumble off the table. Cakes to Dream On is the most dated one of the four, having been released in November 2004.
Pretty Party Cakes: Sweet and Stylish Cakes and Cookies for All Occasions by Peggy Porschen
Like Mich Tuner, London-based Peggy Porschen is a cake decorator who catered to celebrities. In Pretty Party Cakes, Peggy shares the tricks behind her showstopper cookies, cupcakes, and cakes. They are supposed to be as easy to create as they are spectacular.
Some reviewers on Amazon.com said that this book is more accessible than Cakes to Dream On by Collette Peters while other complained about the lack of instructions for multi-tiered cakes. Since these are affordable, I suggest you get both books. Pretty Party Cakes was first published in April 2006.
The Confetti Cakes Cookbook: Spectacular Cookies, Cakes, and Cupcakes from New York City's Famed Bakery by Elisa Strauss and Christie Matheson
If you were a fan of Sex and the City, you might recall the extravagantly beautiful, three-tiered Chocolate Embroidery Wedding Cake done by the Confetti Cakes. Their cookbook contains projects for every skill level.
Featured projects run from the relatively easy Pool Ball Cupcakes, Dice Mini Cakes and Snowflake Cookies to more advanced items like Teacup Mini Cakes that look like detailed porcelain. This is the most recent book of the four; it was published in May 2007.
These four books will help you create show stopper cakes if you have some cake decoration skills and patience. In the worst case scenario, they make delightful coffee table books.
If you have a friend who enjoys baking and cake decorating, why not bring one of these books as a hostess gift? That is an excellent trick to be invited again since your friend will want to show off her creations.

Chandeliers are popular for dining rooms and the bedrooms. Crystal chandeliers are gorgeous but not everyone can afford it.
That is why I am thrilled to show you these stylish chandeliers made of Plexiglas and glass.
European flair with Incidence
The first collection is manufactured by Incidence located in France. As with many European design products, you can choose from an array of colors and chandelier models.
The design is sophisticated. I particularly enjoy the uses of 2 or 3 tones; it adds a modern twist to a classical model.
The green model with a single light would look great in a powder room. You could place 3 chandeliers in a row to dress up a long entrance hall. At only 38 € a piece, it is not even an indulgence.
Unfortunately, I did not find a retailer in North America that carries the Incidence chandelier collection. So if you know one, feel free to pass along us this information. Follow-up story: Since then, I found a small boutique in Montreal with the chandeliers by Incidence on stock.
Canadian manufacturer Titus supplies Home Depot
I went online to find a source for affordable Lucite chandeliers. I found a few at the Canadian stores of Home Depot. For once, Canadians can buy a superb collection that is not available in the United States.
They are produced by a company from Toronto called Titus Manufacturing. They lack the French flair of the chandeliers by Incidence but they are still beautiful.
They are also available in several colors. The pink, red or green even make them suitable for a girl bedroom.
The fabric shades are a nice touch. Why not change the fabric of the shades with a beautiful patterned fabric that complement your decor? If you are unsure how to do it yourself, look online for a professional in your area. If you go to a good textile store, they make be able to recommend someone.
The budget-conscious who are looking for a cool and stylish chandelier should check these out.

Almost two weeks ago, I introduced the wine and dine plates which enable you to carry with your wine glass inside your plate. I found something more fun and exclusive.
I spoke about the importance of having a decent plate rim. Dutch-born designer Alissia Melka Teichroew (AMT) came up with a neat solution with her Handful of Plates. Alissia explained her concept in these words:
Ever been in the middle of a great conversation at a party when you suddenly realize that your canapés have rolled off the flimsy paper plate you’re holding? AMT has a solution: pre-folded, natural-colored ceramic plates that are easy to hold and keep food and utensils in place.
Handful of plates is a trio of plates each with its own level of curved sides. The two higher Taco shell folds were designed for eating. The lesser curved plate can be used for serving food and eating.
Useful tips to set a buffet table
Serving snacks and sweets is quick and easy with the flatter plates. The shown buffet table looks better than a simple buffet but it lacks some eye-catching elements. When you plan a party, I suggest you set aside some time to be more creative with the food presentation and the basic layout.
Try to create zones on a long table. One decorative trick is to highlight the repetitive elements. Before you position the plates, scan your plates and food. Then, imagine a scheme under the theme of repetitions. Remember that things do not have to be identical to be repetitive; they need to share a common element. Shapes, colors, textures, patterns, sizes are the obvious choices.
The grouping technique is more effective when done in clearly defined zones. Your area can be defined by putting them at different heights; 5 to 8 inches is often enough to get noticed.
Elegance dictates that you should never overcrowd the buffet table with food. It is easier to keep the serving plates this way. Plan two services if you have too much.
Tips to save money
The flatter plate is more curved up than the rim on typical mingle plates. To be kinder to your wallet, let your guests enjoy the 3 plates. Use the serving dishes you already own to layout the snacks and sweets.
We have all seen people reproducing this technique with cheap paper plates. Let me reassured you that it looks lots more sophisticated with these ceramic plates. Since a set of three plates costs $110 at GreenerGreenDesign; no one will think you are cheap if Handful of Plates become your mingle plates.
You can stop by Spring in Brooklyn to take a peek at Handful of plates before you buy it. Otherwise, GreenerGreenDesign sells it online for $10 less.

Original and clever serving dishes make a last impression when you are entertaining.
Cucumber, melon and Tomato dish series designed by Willem Noyons clearly qualifies as distinctive pieces. Let’s examine the versatility of the tomato dish.
The pictures tell the story. The cover preserves the freshness of the cut vegetables or it becomes as a serving bowl. The possibilities are endless. For once, someone taught about an integrated pick holder.
The cucumber dish stacks two dipping bowls that can be separated. Whole honeydew melons and cantaloupes stand tall at the center of the melon dish. But do not be fool by these names; you can serve whatever you want in these neat plates.
Not your typical candle holder
Often called Fruit & Fire, Candle Dish really extends the limit of imagination. Candle Dish is a candelabrum that becomes a fruit bowl when you flip it over. Often we do not know what to do with our candle holder when not in use. Having no free storage space in your cabinet is not a problem anymore. Just use Candle Dish as a bowl for your citrus fruits, apples, pears and more.
Eco-friendly products
Design products are a reflection of our living condition. Naturally it is easier to spot the key factors if you visited a country. That is why I usually reserved some time to visit small design and home accessories shops when I go to vacation.
The lack of space in Netherlands pushes their designers to create double duty objects and furniture. On my book, that fact alone is making them eco-friendly.
About Atelier Willem Noyons
Located in Utrecht, Netherlands, Atelier Studio Willem Noyons designs and produces graphic and three-dimensional work since 1982. Our projects are characterized by a conceptual way of approach and imagination on a realistic budget. Some pieces were designed exclusively for our clients. A consumer line is sold in stores and museum shops or through their Web site.
