Back to Basics Thanksgiving Menu | Tastespotting Watch

I gathered classic recipes with a twist on the ingredients or the food presentation. Enjoy!

butternut squash-tangerine soup with pistachio gremolata :: duchess potatoes on ramakins :: tastespotting

+ A Butternut Squash-Tangerine Soup with pistachio gremolata appealed to my senses. The tangerine juice adds a brightness of flavor to the butternut soup. The pistachio gremolata garnish looks and must taste amazing. Thanks to Cathy of Noble Pig for preparing this appetizing butternut soup.

+ I cannot recall when I last ate Duchess potatoes. This classic dish can regain its lost glory when served in individual ramekins. I usually sprinkle the paprika. The light brushing technique is something to try. Via The Well Seasoned Cook.

Serving Bowls and Side Dish Recipes for Thanksgiving

The simplest way to enhance your family-style service Thanksgiving menu is displaying your food in out-of-the-ordinary platters and bowls.

large footed comport and roasted potatoes with caramelized shallots recipes

A white footed comport, also referred as a footed compote, is perfect to serve your side vegetables. They look great with bright greens like spinach or Brussels sprouts.

I do not know the origin of the bowl on the left. The one at the right is from Sophie Conran for Portmeiron collection. I own this one. At 12.5 inches of diameter, its ample size can serve a big family. When I host an antipasto party, I use it to serve salads or cut breads and savory cookies.

Ruth Cousineau’s Roasted Potatoes and Caramelized Shallots look appetizing in the black ceramic serving bowl.

I wish Happy Thanksgiving to all my American readers.

For my international readers, you may not be aware that Thanksgiving is probably the most widely celebrated holiday in the United States. You can feel its effect on the blogosphere with many bloggers taking a break today.

This is a vintage postcard that I saw on Flickr. If you enjoy the look, there are more cute postcards on The Real Devil Doll's photostream.

Autumn scenes dinnerware for an elegant Thanksgiving table

autumnal themed thanksgiving tables at micheal fina

For my last look at a Thanksgiving table this year, I want to finish in style. As I mentioned before, I am fond of pewter tableware. I enjoyed their craftsmanship and their eternal elegance.

With winter coming, people living in colder climates are looking for warmth in their home decor. Even if I am truly a modernist, autumn has this effect on me.

As a Canadian, I am not a specialist in the American culture of Thanksgiving. But basically, Thanksgiving celebrates the end of the harvest season. So we take time to thank Mother Earth and the people that work on bringing us fresh food at the table. It is also the hunting season.

With the kind of food that is fashionable right now for entertaining at home, the Country styles both from France and Italy are in right now because they better complements the meal. When I talked with the sales director at Arthur Quentin last month, she confirmed the trend. Many of their customers live in hip modern décor house.

An elegant twist on a cool modern dinner table for Thanksgiving

thanksgiving modern tablescape at lekker

Last month, we sadly cancelled a trip to Boston where I planned a visit to Lekker. That is probably why there was the first retailer I think of for my Thanksgiving tablescape.

The basic elements of my tablescape

My starting point was the Dibbern Gold Leaf Dinnerware Collection. This modern bone china collection adds sophistication to a contemporary table. This set wins more points because it is dishwasher safe.

A gold flatware is preferable in this case. I went with the clean lined Due Ice Oro Collection by the Italian brand Mepra. This 18/10 gauge stainless steel flatware has a brushed gold finish.

This dinnerware and flatware combination will stay with you for years to come and the look is appropriate for all occasions. For your upcoming Holiday events, simply change the accessories to create a seasonal look. The reusability factor is important because each place setting does not come cheap.

Tabletop ideas for Thanksgiving or an autumnal dinner party

thanksgiving autumnal decor by pottery barn

Oranges and browns are the seasonal tones as you can see from these styled shots by Pottery Barn.

I selected pieces with refined country charms to evoke a comfortable ambiance. After all, Thanksgiving is a celebration amongst your close friends and family.

What about the specific items that I picked?

Wood carvers hollow out a single piece of mango wood to form each organically shaped vessel. So each piece is unique. You can fill them with fruits, vegetables or seasonal nuts.

The Harvest table is another autumnal favorite theme. Imagine a space like a manor in the country. Having one-of-a-kind serving ware and accessories immediately add interests to your party.

The Harvest bowl, platter and salad plates fall into that category. Accessories like a set of 4 gourd candles, the Feather table runner, the Pheasant salad plates mixed with the Studio dinnerware and the Antler chandelier complete the theme.

Menu and inspirations for a Thanksgiving dinner party

thanksgiving party theme and menu

Thanksgiving is next Monday in Canada. We are lucky to have a warm autumn so far. Oranges and reds brighten the trees but there are still many shapes of greens around us. That will be my color palette.

I proposed to you a more refined look on Thanksgiving. We must make an effort to modernize what we serve on the table at any holiday because the old recipes lost their luster. The best of what this season has to offer were invited at my updated Thanksgiving tabletop.

Something to remember

To be thankful, you need to remember what you got. Why not make a mobile with pictures that summarizes the joys that happened in the last year? You can ask your guests to bring each five photos and hang them as they arrive. Those memories could be something to discuss all dinner long.

Take this fabulous fixture as an inspiration for making your own mobile. German designer Ingo Maurer created with Blushing Zettel, a hanging lamp that displayed Japanese drawings suspended from thin metal cables.
