Right here in Montreal, Atelier Petit Chef offers culinary activities for children as young as 3 years old in a kid-friendly kitchen. Kids not only learn how to cook but most importantly the recipes tickle their taste buds by initiating them to new flavors.
Cooking classes for kids are an awesome idea. We are never too young to learn how to cook. It may be a way to bring our kids away from junk food. Since the kids bring home the recipes they cooked during the class, redoing the recipes in your own kitchen is an excuse to stimulate the habit of home cooking.

It is too late to make your own Spooky House for this Halloween but still we can all appreciate the beauty behind this Spooky House all made of felt pieces. If you omit the pumpkins, you can reuse the kit for a happy ghost kid party.
Assembling the house is a fun activity to do with kids. These houses and cakes are the creations of two New York designers Robin Arocha-Buckley and Elizabeth Werner. They launched Twinkle Kids in 2006.
Each Twinkle House arrives with a bag full of 100% Öko-Tex certified wool felt decorations plus the cardboard house or tiered cake.

Dianne emailed me about this cute milk and cookies first birthday party. It is easy to tweak the milk and cookies theme for a baby shower.
Nice effects on this party are the blown up baby picture display and the old-fashioned individual milk bottle. For $50, you can order your own Photo Tiled Display; it can be done from any picture. A cute Happy 1st Birthday dangled over the photo tiles.
The color palette was inspired by chocolate cookies. This gender neutral color palette would suit a couple baby shower. More and more people choose to have baby showers for both parents. Polka dots were a nice touch. Using polka dots for the party favor labels would create a more modern and cheerful vibe.

I told you before about the immense talent of Julie Desmeules, a cupcake maker living in Los Angeles. She is the one who did the Einstein’s cupcakes that Michelle of Clever Cupcakes ordered for her uncle.
Animal Theme Cupcakes
For a baby shower, Blue Cupcake produced vintage owl themed cupcakes with apples, flowers, leaves and birds. The Turtle cupcakes are so adorable.
Finally, look at the details on the Farm Animals cake and cupcakes. This tower was for Jacob's first birthday. This is a fun party theme to celebrate a birthday boy or girl.

This is a cool idea for children. I do not eat products by Hostess Cakes but Google happened to direct me to their site.
Since the Spooky Eyes design is cute and simple to do, I thought of sharing it with you. Enjoy!
October 11th, 2008 Update: I looked back at the recipe and I remarked that Hostess Cakes suggests to use Life Savers (hard shelf candies). I do not think it is wise to serve them on a cake; you can broke your teeth when you chew. I suggest you find a soft shelf candy at the candy store. It does not have to be shaped as a donut. You simply need a circular shape.

I wanted to add interviews for a while now. I am thrilled to start this interview column.
Besides learning a little bit about amazing bloggers, I am curious to discover their favorite places. After all, I decided to interview them because I value their insights.
The interview will be split in two parts. Part two is their city guide.
The first interviewee is Lisa Kothari. If you are a parent, chances are that who know Lisa Kothari from her book Dear Peppers and Pollywogs or that you may have hired her for a kid party or watched her on the several interviews she gave on national television.

Take note because there are plenty of inspirations on these pictures for decorations, costumes and party themes.
When you are hosting a costumed party, it is often more fun to establish a theme. You get the Wow factor by tailoring the decorations and the activities to the theme. It enables you to create a stunning atmosphere.
Party Theme
The Cookie team did a great job on their Vintage Halloween party. The styling job is impressive. With a little bit of imagination, their decor can be reproduced in almost every backyard. Use old branches whenever you wish to create a sense of depth or mystery.
Some kids may require more persuasion but parents should be able to find a way to persuade their kids to dress for a theme. I learned by watching my friends that it is a matter of how you present it to the kids.

I often complain that many cool products are hard-to-find in Canada. And the fact that many American retailers refuse to ship to Canada does not help when you desire products with a small niche.
That is why I am thrilled to introduce Ashley York. This Canadian online store shops the world so we do not have to. My first pick has to be their play house collection.
Textile Play Houses from United Kingdom
Imagine a play date or a birthday party where any of these play houses are the main activity center. You can devote little or lots of time to complete the theme.
No detail is spared in the handiwork of these fabulous play houses. A light aluminum frame forms the structure. The walls and the roof are stitched of the finest embroidered woven cotton. Decorative elements are applied. Curtained windows and doorway plus an handmade floor quilt put the finishing touches.

I imagine this birthday party to be every little boy’s dream. What a treat it must have been for all the kids who showed up.
Reproduce the Look and Feel
You can organize a go kart competition as long as you have enough land. To avoid the cost of renting go karts, you can organize a bike competition where each kid brings its own bike. For safety reasons, clock individual runs. You can use big wheel bikes and tricycles for the younger kids.
Simply construct a race track with road safety cones. Try the circuit a few times to make sure it is safe for the kids.
Flag Race Pennants are easy to find in stores or online. Pennants are available at toys stores and party supplies stores. Auto dealer supply stores carry economical triangular and rectangular race flag pennants with long ropes.

Passing from a NASA engineer to a successful cake designer and baker makes a pretty extraordinary story. BethAnn Goldberg had the creative gene since she started out as a ceramic sculptor before graduating from Stanford.
Studio Cake makes three types: the tiered cakes, the sculpted cakes and the cupcakes. The level of details is impressive. Look at the icy snow on the ground of the snowman cupcakes.
Let the Birthday Cake Be The Gift
If you are planning a birthday for someone that has everything, give a one of kind birthday cake instead. The guest of honor will be in awe when he/she sees the cake. Highlight the event with harmonizing invites, party décor and even wear costumes. Let the party of a lifetime be your gift.
To offset the extra costs, you can ask the guests for contributions instead of giving individual gifts.

I am happy to announce that the Real-life Party series which will feature actual parties done by you is officially opened.
To be fair, it is the third real-life parties from readers since I showcased the Caveman Theme for a 40th Birthday Party in January 2008 and Yuri Gagarin's Night Party 2008 in Montreal in April 2008.
Birthday Cake and Party Favors
Steph, a.k.a. KiwiGirlSteph on Flickr made these adorable cupcakes for a boy fourth birthday party. This mom is very talented and she bakes cakes for her friends and family.

One clear fact that emerged from my debate on kid birthday party favors is the party favors must be useful to win everyone’s hearts.
Craft Project
Ohdeedoh showcases this vintage looking oilcloth lunch bag by Martha Stewart’s Living today. They have a universal appeal.
Kids uses lunch bags all the time. This model has the advantage that you can insert it in the kid backpack. You could add a Velcro if you want that the bag stayed closed.

The pirate theme seduces both children and adults. A pirate party is fit to be really creative with the décor and the food. I spot the cutest pirate cake and cupcakes on Cupcakes Take The Cake blog.
The Sweet Tooth Fairy, a cake shop from Salt Lake City made a Jolly Roger pirate cake plus several dozens of pirate cupcakes for a pirate party. I like everything from the blue and red color palette to the execution.
Pirate Kid Party Ideas
If you are looking for decor ideas, check out the pirate party mood board I did last year. The pirate theme was designed for an outdoor kid birthday party. Yo-ho-ho! A Pirate Party! written by The Finer Things provides more cool ideas.
