A few weeks ago, a friend asked me where he can find reasonably affordable outdoor furniture with great style. He did not want the stuff we see in garden centers in North America.
It is true that the style choices are quite repetitive when it comes to outdoor furniture. I decided to check what is happen elsewhere. UK sounds like a hip design place to start my dig.
The Urban Garden
My first stop is The Urban Garden, an on-line store that sells all you need to transform your garden into somewhere that you can relax, eat and entertain. Based in London, the store carries pieces that would fit into a condo terrace and small backyards.
Modern Garden Furniture Sets
My favorites are the teak contemporary Jocelyn furniture set and the Tomas terrazzo set. Both sets feature unusual benches. The 90-degree teak bench is an attention-grabbing space saver.

With the emails, browsing the Web, RSS reading, we all need some kind of home office.
With the popularity of condo units and open concept living spaces, many people do not have the luxury of a closed office. If you put together a workstation in our living room or bedroom room, you dream of a more stylish design than the office furniture look.
Design Issue
With people relying more on laptops than desktop computers, a simple desk table with limited storage is all you need. The small filing cabinet for sorting the bills and paperwork may be stored in a closet or integrate next to your workstation.
Herman Miller is well established in the office furniture industry. They just launch a new modern collection for home office called Lifework. I guess the popularity of the Nelson Swag Leg Desk, work table, and armchair demonstrates that there is a market for modern home office furniture.

If you guess that the couple who owns the urban organic modern home store Stylegarage in Toronto lives in a lofty space, you are right. Except that they accomplished the look in a suburban duplex.
Urban Modern Style
Their interior design borrows to the loft-chic style. You can feel the warm sensibility of the organic moderns style. The house has a lot of warmth due to an extensive use of wood.
Amanda Schuler and David Podsiaglo live in this house with their 18-month-old son. Let’s review their cool entertaining spaces that are featured on the June 2008 issue of Canadian House and Home magazine.
Dining Room
You may say another chalkboard. For me, it triggers childhood memories. So I still dream of a chalkboard wall in my own home.

This is the coolest hammock I ever seen. At a price tag of $19,500 this is not for everyone. Still, we can all appreciate the stunning design of this 113 inch diameter hammock.
You can drape it for privacy or more protection against the sun. It is supposed to be more stable than the regular hammocks.
The standard size day bed and the huge hammock are perfect to party under the sun. It looks so hip. The San Francisco based company Henry Hall Designs proposes fine outdoor furniture in an array of modern and traditional styles.
Vintage Fusion
The Fusion range mixes teak and stainless steel. The best part for me is the falling pool. I always dreamed of a pool like that.
Vintage is made of stainless steel and synthetic resin. Inspired by the curved plywood chairs of the 1950’s, Vintage line proposes a chaise lounge and a stackable dining chair. As you can read on Henry Hall Designs Web site, the Vintage revives an era of visionary design for the outdoors.

My friend Jennifer Mitchell of Design Hole is in Milan right now for The Salone Internazionale del Mobile. This is the leading event in the home/contract furnishing sector at global level. If you want to what’s new and really capture the trends, the Salone Milano is the best to go.
Being an interior design from Detroit, Jennifer is right in her element. Obviously, she reports daily on what she is seeing at the Salone Milano 2008. Looking at her reports so far, I identify one trend: the return of the wire frames as a key furniture design.
Emu Outdoor Living
The Re-trouvé collection designed by Patricia Urquiola for Emu adds a feminine touch to the garden. The wire is available in several colors. You can see the influence of French classical chairs in the Emu Outdoor Collection. This is not surprising since Re-trouvé translates to To Find Again.

The May 2008 of Canadian House & Home is the Green Issue. It is full of eco-friendly advices and products. What caught my eyes are 3 entertaining details.
Trough sink
The first one is an advertising picture by Ciot. The marble slat is gorgeous. It looks so modern.
I wish I have the space to install a through sink. Typically, you integrate the through sink in your preparation area. When you entertain friends, you use this long and narrow sink to chill bottles of wines, champagnes and beers. Check out the model by Kohler. This trough sink exterior dimensions are 60" x 8-1/4" with a basin depth of 5-15/16".

James Van Vossel is a designer from Belgium who creates fun furniture and housewares. He designs both for adults and children. But I think that he shines the most with his kids collection. Here are three products from his 2008 collection.
Ergonomic playing and sitting ball
The three handles of the inflatable Z-ball are positioned to give a better position to the child. The side handles give more support so the child can sit more in front.
I imagine a child room or a playroom with a trio of Z-balls to reproduce a lounge feeling. The children can even play video games while sitting on the Z-ball.
Modular cubes
Connect is another take on a concept done several times on the past by other designers. What James Van Vossel's design brings new to the table are the big elastics that hold the cubes together. It is so cute!

A look at entertaining essentials: a beautiful dinnerware to serve great food, a glamorous living room to enjoy the sunset and a stylish outdoor room to sip your cocktails.
My 3 picks of the week
Blue Orchid Designs for Style Spotlight: Terra Keramik
This post introduced a new line of environmentally friendly dinnerware. This dinnerware is über stylish dinnerware according to Liene of Blue Orchid Designs. I really like the vast selections of rich, saturated glazes. You can select eight exquisite colors. The platinum rims bring sophistication to sophistication to an otherwise simple design.
If you are interested, the online store of Terra Keramik operates from Connecticut. They currently deliver within the United States, Canada and Australia.

This week is all about mid-century modern furniture and an amazing chandelier. The feeling is soft and airy.
My 4 picks of the week
Design to Inspire for My favourite Canadian magazine
Design to Inspire is a blog that features to die for home interiors. I visit Design to Inspire for a moment of day dreaming. This time, Kim (just like me) talked about Canadian House and Home magazine, one of my monthly must read. I select a room that would make an exquisite eye candy girl bedroom or a modern nursery.
Canadian House and Home magazine produce a digital issue of its magazine. In fact, my digital issue arrives in my inbox before I receive the print version. I like being able to access the entire magazine online anytime, anywhere. But I subscribed to both versions because I still like flipping the pages of a magazine.

The Web site of IKEA has a new feature. For their latest worldwide campaign, IKEA features four Calm Bedrooms as an interactive catalogue.
A microsite showcase four styled bedrooms for women and couples. You see how people used the space through slow motion animations.
What is cool is that you can change angles and click on the furniture to get more information. I like that the new information opens another tab so I can still watch the film.
Four personas, four looks
Like I said earlier, the flash animations featured film clips in accentuated slow motion. The films tell the stories of a specific demographic group.
Each film is based on the same scenario that is repeated for 4 decors. Each film highlights first how a woman endured stressful situations during the day and is longing for her relaxing bedroom.
So whether you are looking for new bedroom furniture or not, I invite you to check out the Calm Bedrooms microsite. It is entertaining once you passed the alarm clock section. For my non technical readers, the alarm clock may seem long but the time is necessary to upload the flash animation.

A reader I. sent me an upcoming press document by IKEA announcing their latest collection for 2008. It is almost a scoop since the document is titled Press February 2008. The document was released earlier on the IKEAFANS Web site.
As I told you yesterday, red is strong. And you definitely get that feeling by reading this 68-page document.
I am presenting you the 5 items that were most interesting from a design point of view.
Double-duty purposes
Part of the innovative product includes an armchair that easily unfolds into an extra bed. The top left picture shows the ODDA bed with two pull-out storage containers. This is a practical idea for a small slumber party; so buy more than one. Then a hat and coat stand, storage space and a laundry basket combine in one unit; that is efficient!

I have been a fan of EQ3 for a while but with no store in the town where I am living, I was more an observer than a participant. Until now!
Yesterday, on my way out of Ze Apéro Montreal event, I spot the front window of EQ3 just in front of Meat Market. That is a lot of unfamiliar names for people that do not reside in Montreal.
Ze Apéro is a monthly happy hour gathering for the young professional jungle of Montreal. Meat Market is a hip meat restaurant bar. EQ3 provides affordable furniture and home décor accessories to modern design conscious consumers.
Tableware and barware collections
There are many things that you can grab for your next party. Start with the latest SCRIPT clear glassware collection with its golden shapes.

I saw a documentary about the future of the Moon exploration this week-end. It hit me as a pretty cool birthday theme for a young boy or a girl.
I recalled the realistic Moon fixture that is a part of the Very Important Products for kids Collection by UK-retailer Habitat. So that is where I started my journey. By digging their Web site further I found everything at Habitat.
The key décor elements for this kid party are the Moon pendant, the Inflatable plane, a couple of Kids bunk beds, Smoothy Monster and a red Flip Kids for playing. Just to make things more exciting for you, Smoothy Monster is creation by French fashion designer Christian Lacroix.

Following my last week trend report on raw material, I noticed that July-August 2007 issue of French Elle Décoration published several articles about this design style.
Once I reviewed my inspirational styled photographs it became clear that Blue Nature designed most of the pieces I wish to highlight.
Bleu Nature is born out of a wondrous exploration of driftwood-a free-spirited, untamed material by Frank Lefebvre in 1995. They got many lines including one inspired by the novel of Robinson Crusoe.
To keep things simple in this post, I am only showing you the work of Blue Nature for the new Mystique Hotel located in Oia on the Santori Island, Greece. The hotel shows that charms and simplicity can feel luxurious.
A collection of raw material furniture
The raw material trend works so well in bare white rooms of these villas. Many of the furniture and accessories were designed for the Hotel. Forget faux-bois, here all the pieces are made of old wood often found on sea shore.
