Introducing Wee Birdy

wee birdy :: rose bakery tower carrot cake :: geninne zlatkis bird botanical prints :: tim walker poster

I want to start the week peacefully. So this is a feel good post.

I discovered a couple weeks ago this fabulous field guide to the good stuff in London, UK. An Australian-born freelance journalist writes Wee Birdy. Her blog is filled with local food places and indie shops.

To give you an idea, I select three of my favorite from her recent posts.

+ Looking at this tower carrot cake from Rose Bakery, I see a similarity with my muffin presentation. So naturally, I love it!

+ The Bird botanical prints by Geninne Zlatlkis, made exclusively for Three Potato Four, complement the carrot cake view. The serenity of the Japanese Lantern is good for the mind and soul.

Beautifully Modern Embroidered Wall Wear by Neawear | Etsy watch

wall wear by neawear on etsy

Today, I am doubly happy to showcase the excellent work of this etsy seller.

Original Patterns

First of all, the wall wears by Neawear are beautiful. They are cross-stitch and embroidery pieces, framed in embroidery hoops (wooden new, vintage metal and wood).

The artist own patterns mixes fresh illustrations with old charms. Like many, I enjoy their modern simplicity. Janick’s wall wears are doing well on Etsy.

About the Creator

Secondly, Janick is one of my Web2.0 friends from Montreal. I say a Web2.0 friend since Janick and I interact exclusively through Web communities until now. We almost met once at a Creacamp.

Earlier this month, as I checked Janick’s Flickr photostream, I spot her wall wear. Then, I noticed a big announcement. Janick is taking the plunge and will work full-time on her crafting business.

Dine on Design Extravaganza

dine on design at monkeytown :: notcot

As I read the outline of this amazing culinary event integrating art and design every steps of the way, I felt some envy for the NOTCOT team that went to Monkeytown for the Dine on Design event.

I wrote down this address for my next visit on the Big Apple. Monkeytown is in Brooklyn, New York.

The most intriguing is the Back Screening/Dining Room where Monkeytown hosted performances with a meal. The back dining room has 4 large screens connected to a surround sound for multimedia performances. Communal seating for 50 persons adds warmth to the place.

Ultimate Integration Of Design And Performance In A Meal

Dine on Design paired dining and design in short-lived gastronomic events where designers, artists, chefs and performers are able to present new and event specific work in a dynamic setting.

Plait Textiles Brings Hand-woven Beauty to Your Table

hand-woven napkins and runners by plait textiles

I planned to discuss something else until I got a Facebook wall message by Janick of Creativadoration. Amongst other things, Janick informed me that she posted something this morning that I will probably like. Janick was right.

These napkins are lovely. The pictures by Jennifer Causey make these table textiles even more desirable. It was the perfect way to wake up.

The Secret Behind Plait Textiles

With savory names like Chocolate Wasabi, Cherry Clafoutis, Salted Raisins and Salted Caramel, Plait Textiles stimulates our appetite.

The Summer Workshop Sale at Gogoglass

gogoglass salt container :: mortar and pestle :: glass fruit tray by annie michaud

Remember the bold color glass kitchenware from Annie Michaud and the exquisite home accessories from Karine Bouchard.

It is that time of the year: Save and stock a few gifts for the teachers of your kids or hostess gifts. This Saturday, June 7th, 2008 is the biannual workshop sale of Gogoglass.

How this event works?

You can get pieces with little imperfections at a fraction of the regular price. I bought an orange lemon reamer at the same type of sales last Christmas.

The event has an educational side since you watch live artists creating pieces at their Marche Bonsecours workshop in Montreal Old Port. The event is from 10 to 17 o’clock.

To understand what is so special about their work, I invite you to read what I wrote when I visited their workshop last Christmas. I first introduced Annie Michaud’s blown glass kitchenware in August 2007.

Old Meets New in the Exotic Collages by Cartolina Cards

greeting cards, note cards, mini cards by cartolina cards

The owner and designer of Cartolina Cards, Fiona Richards sent me a wonderful set of card samples. These greeting cards invite us to a multicultural trip through the centuries that wraps up in a fresh, modern twist.

Ancient Meets Contemporary

You catch influences of ancient cultures, especially India in the work of this independent design studio from British Colombia, Canada.

Fiona Richards grew up in Scotland. Her grandparents were dealers in old world Indian textiles. She often visited her uncle who was an illustrator. So it is not surprising that Fiona Richards successfully interacts with vintage patterns and infuses them with a modern distinctive look.

A pattern is printed on the front and the back of the cards. Therefore, these cards feel luxurious. Whether you are looking for a Have a Beautiful Birthday card, to transmit a Bravo, to forward your Best Wishes, to send Many Thanks, to celebrate Love in Wedding Wishes, check out their one of a kind catalogue at selected retailers across Canada, United States and Australia.

New Modern-Twist Placemats Designed by Matte Stephens and Rex Ray

matrix owl monster placemats by modern-twist

Kat Nouri of Modern-Twist sent me an email where she informed me of their exhibit with Rex Ray designs at SFMOMA.

I am thrilled. I think we should encourage companies that hired known artists to design their patterns. This way we get more exciting patterns on everyday items.

Matrix and Tangle by Rex Ray

Rex Ray is a fine art artist doing collages, paintings and design work,. Rex is also a celebrated graphic designer who worked extensively for the music industry. He designed book covers, more than 100 historic Bill Graham Presents rock and roll tour posters and music packaging.

Now, you can invite Rex Ray to your table with the two patterns he designed for Modern-Twist. Take your pick between Matrix and Tangle. Matrix is available in green or black. Tangle is in orange or copper.  I am showing you Matrix because I enjoy it more.

Nursery Prints and Artful Housewarming Gifts

Jaime Derringer art prints : hummingbird : rocky mountains : chandelier : tea time : jaimers on etsy

I received an email from Jaime Derringer, the blogger behind the always interesting Design Milk blog, announcing new prints on her etsy shop. Her latest prints are produced in limited print run of 25.

At $10 and $18 a piece or 2 prints for $30, her art is quite affordable. Frame a couple of Jaime Derringer’s art prints to decorate a room without breaking the bank. Her hummingbird series would fit very well in a nursery. Write her name down if you have a baby shower party coming soon.

How To Use Art Prints To Decorate Your Home?

I prefer organized wall groupings. You can never be wrong with the traditional long row and the square or rectangular matrix. For that reason, I go with identical size for all my frames.

Having fun with the shadow placemats by Sandra Bautista

A light's drawing by sandra bautistaThis talented artist grabbed my attention because her work titled A light's drawing. The usual suspects appear as silhouette shadow on the placemat.

Regarding at her portfolio, Sandra Bautista probably did it for an artistic purpose. But I find the concept to be chic and fun for entertaining. If you find a place where we can buy those, please inform me.

About A light's drawing, her creator Sandra Bautista says:

Everyday light draws for us...but we never realized...
The graphics on the whole set come from the real shadow so that all objects are related to each other and when using it you will discover all of them.

A time saver for entertaining

If you are too busy, you would not have to bring the plates at the table. But make sure the glasses, the napkins and the utensils are on the table before your guests arrive. One inspiration that complements those placemats is the diner restaurant experience. You can insert the flatware in three ornate glasses, jars or flower vases.

Egg candle holders by Michelle Mason

egg candleholders by michelle mason

Made from English fine bone china, these egg shape candle holders are lovely and modern. They are sold in pair, one medium and one large egg, nicely packaged in a recycled board gift box.

UK artist Michelle Mason designed her latest creations so you can watch the wax drip like egg yolk. It is a fact that the British people like to eat soft-boiled eggs on the morning.

I like the romantic idea but not the wax stain on my tablecloth. If you are like me, you got two choices:

  • Buy no dripping candles but you lose the concept
  • Rest the pair of egg candle holders on a tray or a wood board

I prefer the second option.

Decorating your home at Easter or for a brunch

Better yet, a single tulip or a branch fits into the hole. So get a few pairs. Mix and match candles, empty eggs and plants to create a dramatic effect in your home.

Your avatars as wedding cake toppers

customavatar_caketoppers

I am not a huge fan of wedding cake toppers but these ones got my attention. As a leisure gamer, I found those cake toppers pretty amazing.

Targeting the fans of Nintendo Wii this Valentine, Paul Pape Designs got an overwhelming demand. Their production does not start there. Paul Pape Designs also produces clay imitations of your game avatar characters.

For a wedding, the mid and deluxe options are worthwhile. For $200, the deluxe version delivers a custom job including the reproduction of your wedding dress and the groom's tuxedo. You can decide on your own pose and even, add a scenery.

Not just for getting hitched!

If it is your birthday, have them create a clay imitative sculpture for your event.

Paul Pape Designs is also renowned for its true-to-scale, laser die-cut paper furniture called Pop-Out Furniture.

Valentine cards | Etsy watch

Turtle Papers : Earmark Invitations : Fabulous Finds : Pepperina Press

The love in your life deserves something unique. So start with a crafted card from artists on Etsy. I compiled 4 cute Valentine stationery that fit the bill.

First, Love Birds Valentine’s Day Note Cards is a set of 6 note cards designed by Jennifer of Turtle Papers. Lovely! Comes with 6 chartreuse envelops and costs $9. Charming zoo animals, origami cranes and delicious cupcakes are typical topics.

Love is in the Air brought up memories of a popular disco song. I am singing it as I am writing this post. The picture refers to many years before. The orange caught my eye and I like the vintage feeling. Designed by Australian-born Helen of Pepperina Press, Live is in the Air displays eye-catching shades of strawberry silhouette and orange lettering.

Double-Take: a retrospective of Bettina Forget's paintings

bettina forget's double-take retropective

To make your dinner party more special, think about adding a little field trip.

Tips on how to entertain your guests

Visiting a small art exhibition in a private gallery forms an ideal activity because it does not take too long. They occur all the time so you get no problem finding one at the last minute.

You can invite your friends for a casual dinner at your place or if it is still early, stop for a drink at a cool bar before dining.

The secret of a great event is to have several activities and moving around. When you do that, you always feel that the night was more exciting. Plan for activities that are nearby and that are easily accessible by everyone.

If you invite people who do not know each other, the opening activity acts as an ice breaker. The conversation will be livelier at dinner.

About the Double-Take exposition

Bettina Forget is an adorable talented artist. We went to her latest vernissage last Wednesday. I mixed pictures taken by my husband with some of her own to give you an idea. If you are looking for more significant Christmas gifts, consider paintings. For collectors and home décor fans, paintings can be at the top of their wish lists.

Shopping Alert | Studio sale at Gogoglass

gogoglass studio sales

If you are a regular reader, you probably recalled my post about the colorful glass cooking tools of Annie Michaud.

Next Saturday, December 1st, 2007 is the annual sample sale at Gogoglass. Once a year, Annie Michaud and Karine Vanasse sells blown glass pieces with tiny imperfections, outstanding stock of custom jobs and prototypes.

The imperfections can be in the color, a small difference in the diameter or the shape. Nothing major. Arrive early if you want to get your hand on a slightly imperfect lemon reamer ($15 CAD) or mortar & pestle ($45 CAD). With more than 50% off, I am interested to equip my kitchen with both.

Their Old Montreal studio will be open from 10 am to 6 pm on December 1. Glass blowing demonstrations will be held during the day.

Entertaining illustrations by Paolo Mariotti

paolo mariotti party illustrations

If you can read French, I suggest you take a peek at IDEAT, a magazine about design, architecture and trends made in France. It is one of my favorite magazines.

Paolo Mariotto has a column in IDEAT. Every month, he draws an illustration. He captures the spirit of a trend from somewhere around the globe. In fact, Paolo’s Touch is the first thing I explored when I grabbed my latest issue.

Paolo Mariotto is an illustrator and correspondent for the Brazilian Vogue in Paris, amongst other things.

I wish looking at his drawings will inspire you to host a cocktail or a dinner party this week-end. In the meantime, enjoy the views.

Play on scale | 3 blogs and a mood board - 2007.10.22 edition

Play on scale: 3 blogs and a mood board – 2007.10.22 edition

What caught my eyes for my weekly review of last week blogosphere are the miniatures and the contrasting illusions.

Sometimes, we wish to have guests over for a huge cocktail party but there is no specific occasion. To make that night special, why not design your own little exposition?

It does not have to be miniatures; you can showcase things you collect or your travel souvenirs. The idea is to have something to occupy your guests for a while and to break the ice.

1 | Apartment Therapy NYC

Lori Nix is artist that likes to take pictures on disaster set miniatures. I always have been fascinated by miniatures. I recalled when I was ten and I saw the huge animated Town of Tomorrow miniatures at Disneyland. I did not want to leave. Apartment Therapy shares interesting facts on their The Gallery: Lori Nix post.

Make a lasting impression with the artistic floral creations of Blume

Chocolate and Flowers by Blume

Flowers play a huge role in any distinctive event. To impress these days, a sure bet is to take the artistic road.

We are lucky in Montreal to have several innovative floral shops. The most impressive that I have seen so far is certainly Blume, a shop located on the trendy Saint-Laurent Street. They fashion sculptural floral arrangements.

I spoke on the phone to the owner and art director Mario Godin. He is a talented man and he is pleasant to talk to. After our conservation, I am ever more thrilled about his shop.

My husband’s birthday is coming up this month. It is not hard to imagine where I will pick my flowers.

Take a peek at the new Chocolate & Flowers collection

This year, Blume proposed a new concept for corporate centerpieces for the Holidays. What is so special is the creative Zen union of chocolate and flowers. It is nothing like you have seen before.

Annie Michaud's blown glass kitchenware brings style to cooking

glass mortar lemon reamer salt container decanter by Annie Michaud

I am thrilled to get an email from Annie Michaud yesterday. She just launched a new online store. I am pretty fond of her glass kitchen gadgets.

Collection of food preparation tools

I fancy the Mortar & Pestle, the Lemon Reamer and the Salt Container. My friend Mel owns the glass Mortar and Pestle for several years now. Her mother gave it to her as a housewarming present. These glass kitchen tools are colorful and beautifully crafted. I have seen the finished products at her shop this summer.

Glass objects inject colors in a vibrant yet sophisticated manner. Her kitchen collection is available in black, blue, lime, orange and yellow. So you can coordinate it to your kitchen decor. Since there is no red, I would go for orange or green. The blue is amazing but it does not fit into my decor.

The product descriptions are at the bare minimum. But the pictures give you a good idea of these unique products.
